The Beatles and Their Watches - Part XII - John Lennon's STOLEN Patek FOUND! (update)

Wow! John Lennon's Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Chronograph No. 2499 has turned up in Geneva and a recent court decision concludes that Yoko Ono, and not an Italian watch collector (who acquired it through a now defunct German auction house) is still the legal owner. The Italian watch collector has appealed (he will lose).

The watch was purchased by Yoko Ono for her husband's fortieth birthday, a mere six weeks before he was murdered. It wasn't until 2014 that Ono discovered that the watch had been stolen ... some 35 years after she gave it to her famous husband!

A single word is engraved on the back of the watch which is referenced as follows in the court case:

C______ had the inscription “______” engraved on the back in reference to the first song “______” from the album “______” that the couple had composed together after a period of separation.

I can't imagine what it is.

Lennon and Ono separated in 1973 and reunited in 1975.  First song contenders on albums composed together are: “Two Virgins No. 1” (1969); “Cambridge 1969” (1969); “John & Yoko” (1969); “Mother” (1970); “Imagine” (1971); “Woman Is The N***** Of the World” (1972); and “(Just Like) Starting Over” (1980).  Only the latter is a contender for the description.  Although I am prepared to guess that the court got it wrong and the real answer is “Imagine.”

If I were to guess I would say it was "Yes" - that's what her art piece said when they first met. But who knows.

I've been reading the decision (which redacts names and a whole slew of things) but it says this:

"C________ had the inscription “______” engraved on the back in reference to the first song “______” from the album “______” that the couple had composed together after a period of separation."

So I am guessing it is not the opening track of Sometime In New York City.

They found it! That's awesome, I've wondered for ages if it would ever be found.

The Hodinkee article does a good job of telling the story of what happened to it, but the decision itself (which I am still reading in translation) is quite interesting too. I will report on it after I've digested it.

I kinda think it’s just sad . John got shot for talking about “ the man’s” manipulation of us all and his articulate speech got him killed for it . It wasn’t random , that’s a whole other rabbit hole. Yoko Ono will end up selling it off , it should have gone to Shaun or Julian .

Well, Yoko is 90 (and very unwell). I doubt she will sell it. It will probably end up with Sean. Currently, it's held in escrow in Geneva while the appeal gets underway.

Why would someone keep a stolen watch or any stolen property, the collector took a risk and purchased a stolen item in this case a watch, he should have done his do deligence and as a result a stolen property has been found. It's well documented that this Patek. 2499 has been missing for some time and without box and papers it was risky.
