Steams effect on a watch?

Watches and showers. I’ve heard that wearing even the most water resistant watch in the shower is a bad idea due to the steam, which can get into the watch where water can’t. I don’t wear my watches in the shower anyway BUT I’m curious if this is actually a thing or just an old wives tale (apologies to any old wives in the platform).

Lots of anecdotal evidence out there that says people shower with or leave the watch in the room with them and the watch is fine after years of this behavior.

I can't really find any official or scientific source one way or the other.

I think it's fine at 50m+ of WR.

YMMV of course.

I supposed theoretically there is something with molecule size or whatever (not a scientist, in case you couldn't tell), but it seems pretty unlikely that a modern, properly serviced & tested watch would be that vulnerable. I'm sure there's a watchmaker here with a more informed opinion.

I once saw a comment on a similar thread that has stuck with me.  "You're at way more risk of dropping the watch on the tile floor of your bathroom while taking it off than having it leak in the shower."

I've never had a problem wearing even my F-91W in a Turkish bath while having my back thrashed with palm leaves by one of my hairy-backed chums.

Time and chemicals will kill a watch faster. Neoprene seals dry out with age and so do the straps. Chemicals rot the straps and any oils that hit that neoprene can swell it and rot out the seal. Changing barometric pressure will still allow pressure equalization over time into a watch but very slowly. Actual rubber was better but they quit putting that in seals and tires long ago. I have a few tires at my shop that look new but were produced in the 60s made of actual rubber.

I've been wearing my g shock in the shower. All fine so far!

Although another g shock was instantly water damaged after one wear... turns out a 20 year watch with a missing gasket doesn't do well with water - who'd have thought.

I cook on a flat top grill, steam is a major part of my day, and my gshock dw5600 and Casio Duro never seem to have any trouble with it.
