4 watches for the price of 1…

Earlier this year I was fixated on the Tudor Pelagos LHD.  I budgeted for it and was ready to buy one.  Right before I pulled the trigger, I had a revelation.

Sure I could sit there like Gollum with my expensive watch, but in the end I couldn’t share that experience.  Then I had an idea.  My parents are both getting ready to retire and my brother has worked hard as an environmental lawyer for the government but none are in a position to share the hobby of expensive watches.  So…I decided to take the money that I had saved and get us all watches.

The next question was, which watches?  I needed to stay around the budget of the Pelagos. For my dad, brother and myself narrowing it down to a dive watch was easy.  My dad got my brother and I certified when we were in high school so it’s something we’ve shared for over 20 years.  I wanted them to be the same watch but with some sort of individual flair.

I looked for watches offered in multiple colors.  I considered Zodiacs but x3 it was starting to exceed my budget.  I liked the idea of a micro brand like Eza but wanted a more established brand with dive history for their first automatic watch.  I started to lean to Seiko but decided to stay Swiss only because it sounded cooler to my Dad and brother 🤷🏻.  Doxa, specifically the Sub 200, checked all of the boxes.  Stylish, great dive history and easy to service.  So I ordered 1 Sharkhunter, 1 Caribbean and 1 Aquamarine.

Then came my mom’s watch, which proved to be more difficult of a decision.  Trying to figure out, not necessarily what she “thought she wanted” but what she “actually wanted but didn’t know it yet” proved very challenging.  I’ll save you all the entire process, but ultimately I found a great deal on an almost new 28mm Tudor 1926 on Chrono24.

There you have it, no Tudor Pelagos LHD for me, but for about the same price I now get to share watches with my parents and brother (except mine hasn’t arrived yet)…which has proven to be much more valuable. It has even gotten my brother sucked down the Seiko rabbit hole already…

It’s fun to watch it go from “eye rolling” while they listen to me drone on about watches, to seeing them constantly looking at their wrists and showing them off.

Great alternative pieces!  I also wanted a tudor pelagos,  but after watching Teddy Baldassare on youtube I decided on a Zelos Mako Version 3 in vintage black.  It is a spec monster with titanium case/bracelet and ceramic bezel all for south of $700.

What a great gesture, I dont if I would do the same mainly because I know only my mom would wear a watch I gifted her haha. Hope you and your family enjoy those watches for years to come.

Not what I was expecting when I opened this thread. What a great idea and generous gift(s)! Kudos to you. And if your family reads this, maybe they can chip in on a Pelagos for you for the holidays…

Fantastic post. I’ve been having thoughts of doing the same recently, and I think this post may be the push I need to forgo my next big purchase and treat those around me instead!

Such a great geature. Which Doxa did you get yourself?

Not only is this a really nice story, but it is also good to know the Tudor to Doxa conversion rate: 1:4.

I opted to add a bit of color to my collection and picked the Aquamarine, but I had to go with the bracelet because while I like the color, the matching rubber strap was a bit too flashy for me.
