I'm going to get a promaster for my brother and i wanted to fit an extension clasp as he does spearfishing and so often wears wetsuits. But that got me thinking: are the original bracelets any good? or would i be better off getting one with a rubber strap and replacing the bracelet entirely?

I'd almost say keep the stock bracelet, and then pick him up a killer single pass style.
Depending on budget, either Crown and Buckle or Zulu Alpha has options that would work. Sewn in buckles, good colors, and hardy.
My uncle bracelet with solid end links is great.
3 of my Promasters are on bracelets from LIW and one is on a hybrid strap from Strapcode.
What I would do is to get his wrist measured with the suit own and go for a rubber or a NATO. Spearfishing takes some effort and I wouldn't want a stainless steel band to get in my way.

The LIW bracelets are great, but they don’t have a diver’s extension.

Honestly I agree, never enjoyed the unnecessary heft of a bracelet, but i guess some people only trust steel

Yeah i think a nice single pass looks even better on a diver than a bracelet
I have natos, straps and bracelets and I swap them around as needed. My BB58 is on a marine national.
