Quartz divers under 500?

I wanted to buy my brother a nice dive watch (he enjoys spearfishing) for his 18th birthday. As he isn't really a watch guy i think he'll appreciate the ease of a quartz but it seems this sector is dominated by citizen and seiko as micro-brands mostly focus on mechanical movements, any ideas?

If your brother plans to wear the watch into the water, then water resistance will be a paramount consideration. The most common mistake is to fail (or forget) to screw down the crown before entering the water (some people leave the crown out for ease of watch setting). Although I own the Citizen diver watch on the left, I am more partial to the one on the right because of the brilliantly lumed hands and dial markers. I am not sure how deep your brother dives when he spearfishes, but if its into the darker depths, he will want lume with some longevity and I cannot confidently attest to that for Citizen dive watches. The lume is okay when initially charged, but fades quickly (as witnessed in a darkened theater). As for time accuracy of the Citizen watch, it's excellent.

Vaer has a selection of solar divers (and quartz field watches) that you may want to check out.

Get him a mechanical watch which everyone you go with and show him how easy it is to function. This is your best hope of turning him into an addic….enthusiast

I have recently purchased the Ratio Freediver 200m quartz {my first diver) and really like it. 40mm, silicon strap, great lume, around $105 US.

Two I have not seen mentioned that are also options for quartz divers are Lum Tec and Protek. Lum Tec has a nice dive watch which has a Seiko solar movement; the Solar Marine 3, while Protek makes carbon case dive watches with tritium tubes; the 1000 Series.

Glycine combat sub is a good shout! If it’s good enough diver for the military… then it’ll be good for spearfishing! 😂

It's not too deep, 10-15m max and there's no oxygen involved so he can live without the lume. But I must agree quick-fading lume is basically useless, thanks for the comment

The golden one looks surprisingly good

I already probed him enough to know he's gonna wear it, but you're right you wanna gift watches so bad that you forget most people aren't really looking for one
