Yellow gold: yea or nay?

I was never a gold watch fan. I didn’t like all the red/rose/pink gold shades, I loved the yellow gold color but I found it too flashy. Till I got last year my Grandpa’s watch. A yellow gold Dugena with a gold sunray dial; very flashy, very gold. I love it.

So, I tried to find a modern yellow gold dress watch, which is almost impossible. There is the Calatrava, the Patrimony, Breguet Classique and some Cartier, full stop. No yellow gold at JLC, AP, Piaget, Chopard, Lange, Glashütte, Girrard Perregaux or AP. Rolex produces by far the biggest gold watch variety, but only sports watches on gold/rubber bracelets.

My dream yellow gold watch would be a Saxonia or Saxonia thin, but at the moment it is only available in red and white gold or a proper mechanical Tank, which you get only in Quartz currently.

I know that it is recently not in fashion, but so little selection, seriously!?

Am I the only sucker for yellow gold? What do you think about that metal color, will it have a comeback?

I think gold will always be a staple. There will be variances, like rose, pink, etc., but yellow gold will be available for dress pieces. Indeed, the use of yellow gold was more prominent years ago and wained off as other options became available. That said, I welcome the use of yellow gold on more designs. I have a few yellow gold watches that I mostly wear on the weekend. They are flashy. They are really flashy, but they do look good on the wrist.

Perhaps that's why you don't see the use of yellow gold too often in modern pieces; most would instead fly under the radar.

I have been after an all gold piece and was lucky to find the Seikonaut in all gold at less than retail. I love it! I have an old all-gold Seiko too. It's on a perlon strap at the moment, but I might have to upgrade it to a leather band.

I LOVE yellow gold (I wrote this a few years ago: https://www.hautetime.com/hello-yellow-gold-watches/95833/

You're right, rose/red golds have taken over, which is a shame - I don't know why we can't have a choice of both!

The now-discontinued Cellini Danaos 4243/8 (38mm, manual-winding) in yellow gold is a piece I keep coming back to for another look. Older Cellini watches are the most undervalued Rolex out there, so prices are interesting too 😀

It is so strange: for years I have detested yellow gold watches of any kind. I have only steel, WG or PT in my collection and one RG. But recently, I have noticed that yellow gold is actually looking very special and I am starting to really like it.

I think it is because it has been rather out of favor to PG or RG for a long time, and now looks 'fresh' in comparison.

I've never been a fan of yellow gold, I prefer white, or rose/red gold. Even back before yellow gold was out of fashion, I preferred white gold.

The older I get, the more gold I can take. Saying that, some of my earlier watches were gold / gold-plated, and it works fine for me.

I tend to like things pretty garish, so early doors this Enicar caught my eye:

Gold is beautiful.

Love real Gold. The dial/hands combo on this one is unreadable to me though.

I am not a fan of vintage, but you are completely right. Vintage I would find a brought variety of yellow gold for very nice prices (because they are out of fashion). And this Cellini looks really great!
