My childhood clock had a mechanical movement?

Visiting the folks and find this old thing. Completely forgot it existed but apparently it has a wind up mechanical movement inside. (It still works!) it’s nothing fancy but I suppose I now know where this fascination began…

Electric digital flip clock for me. While you didn't hear any loud ticking you did hear the numbers flipping on the minute, every minute.

Muggles see a mechanical movement. Wizards see little fairies put to indentured servitude for your timekeeping amusement 🤣

The back of the clock looks like a sad robot.

Indeed music box is quite similar to watches and clocks. This silly childhood clock of mine seems to have a secondary mainspring for powering the alarm. Definitely says MADE IN CHINA tho 😂

Ah, when I was a kid , I had a mechanical alarm clock to get me up for school. I was notorious for not getting up so said clock was in a biscuit tin on opposite side of my bedroom so I had to get up to turn it off, & in a biscuit tin because I'm hard to wake up and the tin amplified the noise of the alarm.

My Dad still has the clock, which still works despite being thrown across the room numerous times in the 1980's 🤣

80's or 90's? Mum and Dad had one in their room and I swear I could hear it flicking over numbers from my bedroom 🤣👍🏻

I have my Mom blasting Micheal Bolton and Kenny G as my alarm clock!! 😣

I still wake up alert when I hear…

🎶when a maaaaaan loves a wooomaan🎶

These mechanical alarm clocks always make a sad face in the rear. :-(

I took mine apart as a child, thinking ‘how hard can it be’ to put it back together - apparently very hard!

My first one was when I was a kid in the '70's though supposedly they go back way before that and are also called "flap clocks". I've searched in vain for the one I had after that which was orange and had a constantly revolving hypnotic wheel. While the hypnotic wheel was supposed to lure you to sleep the clacking of the time change every minute said NOPE! They also could only be adjusted in one direction so for daylight savings time your choices were to unplug the clock for an hour or clack it forward 23 hours.

The back of that clocks looks mighty sad... :(

Such mechanical alarm clocks were pretty common in the 80s and 90s in Europe. I still remember the feeling of winding one, but haven't seen any in the last 30-ish years.

My neighbor had a beauty and the beast one like that. I hated staying at her house because it was so loud when it went off in the morning. I had an electronic cat clock that played a bugle.
