What is it about the 28th day of the month?

Rolex ads and catalogues always show the dates of watches set to 28. Just as the 10:10 position has long been considered the aesthetic ideal for hand position on the dial, Rolex has deemed 28 the most beatiful numerals to magnify under a cyclops lens. Personally I prefer 28, but what do I know!

Ah… never noticed that!

Interesting. I’ve never noticed that. Maybe the date has some historical significance for Rolex. Plus, It also fills out the entire date window, which might look better in promo shots instead of a single digit. Symmetry and all that.

The number fills up the entire date window which is aesthetically pleasing. Especially with the cyclops.

Definitely a two digit date would be preferred to show off the date window. But lots of others to choose from. Another theory I have is that it’s because it’s the highest date that all months have.

Good point. I found this behind discussed in the forum.

I am Chinese but except for a few brief years in Hong Kong and Kowloon, I missed a lot. A young guy that I know naturally loves everything Rolex, he claims some ad exec decided that since 8 is considered “lucky” based on the sound in Chinese for luck 2X8 is double luck. They sell a lot of Rollies in Asia no need to upset The Fates. I don’t prefer Rolex so I am just passing along the word.

It's for inclusiveness.

Every month has 28 days. This way no one feels left out.

Hadn't noticed this before and think I'll now be looking for it everywhere. I like the 2x8 theory, one to put to Rolex marketing...

Sure but there are 27 other days they share in common too. 😉

It’s how many thousands of dollars you have to spend before they let you buy a Rolex ,$28,000

I know for a fact 28k cad is not enough in Toronto

·

I’ve always wondered too. My guess (in terms of design wise) is because 28 is the widest in terms of font size. It leaves a nice equal spacing around the numerals in the date window.

If it was me I think all brands should just set it to 3 if the date is on position 3 or 6 if it is on 6 and so on.😜

·

It’s the multiple amount they over charge you. 😂

·

Personally I think 30 fills it the best and @TOwguy is onto something about the 2x8 .

Great observation!
