Rolex vs Omega vs Grand Seiko

A lot of people may get upset over this but ima talk about it.

So I have been collecting watches for over 15 years now, I owned many Rolex and many Omegas in my days now.

Omega vs Rolex watch quality, if you really dissect the watch, I find that Omega actually makes higher quality watches.  The reason to this is Omega master Chronometer certified watches are more accurate (generally +1 second per day), they can resist shock and electromagnetic far better than any Rolex. So the Master Chronometer is far superior to Rolex Superlative Chronometer.  In terms of finish, the basic stainless steel watches seems to be better made and last longer.  (Out of all my watches I owned, only my Tudor BB41 red, Rolex Explorer II ever broke and had to be sent back to be repaired).

Omega has a richer history that actually matters:
1. First watch ever on the Moon

2. Holds the record for the watch that went deepest in to the Ocean (Mariana Trench)

3.  Official timekeeper of the Olympics - a very prestigious sport

4.  Took of as James Bond main watch

5.  Won the trial against many big names of the watch industry for NASA to goto the moon.  And NASA found the Speedmaster to be the most capable watch (beat out the Rolex Daytona on testing)

6.  First watch to placed a Tachymeter outside the bezel, where now this seems to be the modern standard, even Rolex copied with their Rolex Daytona

Rolex I must admit is the king of marketing.  They paid actors and successful people early on to wear their watches.  So now Rolex is synonymous with success.

Rolex paid a swimmer on the British channel to wear the watch while she swam for hours and the watch still worked.  (she failed the event and didn't make time), but the watch at the end still worked.

They made the first watch proof watch - marketed hard by putting their watches in fish bowls in front of their store to show it's waterproof.

I love my Rolex, it has a prestige to it that feels good when you wear it, you are wearing a Rolex.  If you talk to people that don't know anything about watches, first luxury and expensive watch that comes to their mind is Rolex.  They won the marketing department hard.

But in regards to achievement and quality, I really do believe Omega is above that of Rolex.  But Rolex at the end of the day is the king of Marketing.

In regards to absolute highest quality, Grand Seiko is the king.  They are not very good at marketing, but it takes a special person to see the attention to detail of a simple dial on a watch.  A high end Grand Seiko in regards to finish and quality rivals that of Patek and and Vacheron Constantin watches that sells for 50x a Grand Seiko.

Grand Seiko also in achievements and innovation is not marketed well, but they done some remarkable things in history.

Seiko - almost destroyed the luxury watch industry with their innovation of Quartz watches

Grand Seiko Spring Drive - remarkable innovation to keep time, the accuracy of watch for an automatic watch is astounding.  But what else makes it special, is that to manually wind, takes much less winds, than a typical manual wind watch from Rolex or Omega.

Tell me something interesting about watches.

They all have their pros and cons. It is up to the customer which attribute will be given more weight whether it is design, movement, build quality, materials used, price, etc. Plus there is always that thing about brand loyalty. As I have come to realize here at WC, we all have our own preferences.  What may be a good piece to one may not mean anything to another.  So as the saying goes, "You do you". 😉
