Q: How did you get into watch collecting?

I've always been watch-adjacent because of a family friend who is a hardcore vintage Seiko/KS/GS collector among other things. After being gifted a Hamilton Pocket watch from 1932, losing it in a couple hectic moves, and then rediscovering it a couple years later (I was right for the record, it was around there somewhere!) I did some research into the history of it and very rapidly fell down the rabbit hole of watch servicing YouTube videos. Shortly thereafter spent entire weeknights and weekends trying to find a wristwatch that resembled my beloved pocket watch that I could wear everyday. Never found one I could afford that also fit my smaller wrists unfortunately, but the sickne-- I mean hobby had taken hold.

Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?

Technically it was probably some random kid's digital watch, an F-91W or some facsimile of a thing. The oldest watch that I still have that is my Pulsar "something or other" Submariner/Speedmaster mashup I've had since I was maybe 8 or 9 and was gifted by a family member. I didn't love watches back then, but I liked wearing a thing that I could fiddle with at school and that made me feel more like a grown up.

Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?

I would say to educate yourself as much as you can before making purchase, and then make your purchases in one of two ways. 1. Slowly and with intention, always considering each piece with heavy scrutiny about what you want and what you're expecting. or 2. As many cheap watches as you can get your hands on, knowing full well you will likely lose some money in the process, just to experience what's out there and to learn what you like. Ultimately though, buy what you like, sell what you don't wear anymore, and have fun!

Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?

I'm a big fan of microbrands and brands with heritage, which I realize is a big net, but that's okay with me! Lorier and Seiko were some of the brands that really got me going when I started collecting, but these days I'm shifting a little bit up-market and my recent acquisition (and adoration) of a Longines has made it the focus of my attention.

Q: What is your grail watch and why?

I don't really have one grail watch. There are lots of watches that I would love to have, but never will for one reason or another. The Grand Seiko SBGW231 is one watch that I absolutely adore, but my utter anxiety about a full polished case of that quality keeps me from pulling the trigger. There are some independents that do incredible things I'll never be able to afford, responsibly or otherwise. And I'm always on the hunt for new chronographs (especially Longines!) to add to the box as well.
