Seriously Rolex?

I was prepared to slag off Rolex today. More boring micro-changes to existing watches. A slightly bigger Explorer? Yawn. An OP with a different, dare I say ugly, dial? Yawn. Slight adjustments to the Daytona, Sky-Dweller, Yacht-Master and GMT Master II? Yawn.

Then I saw the 1908. Here we go! Finally, a Rolex I can see myself wearing. A well designed watch with a simple, elegant dial and a nifty clasp? Tell me more! I could get one ...

If I simultaneously win the lottery and lose my mind so I can pay $34,300 NZ for the 1908.

So yeah, Rolex can sod off. If you need me I'll be looking at Tudor, Tag Heuer and Oris.

It's a lovely looking watch and like you say, by Rolex standards quite restrained and tasteful.

But the price! Value for money...no. Worth the money....no.

Lots of other equally nice and nicer dress watches out there from premium makers which you will actually be able to buy!

Maybe I am crazy but to me $22K USD does not seem that off to me for a precious metal dress watch from one of big houses. Would I buy it? No, but a basic two handed Calatrava is twice the price. A manual wind Patrimony is $20K, so to me this actually seems reasonable in comparison. The Rolex dress watch line was meant to compete with those two more than it was the other three brands mentioned.

I agree with you sir..If I needed a dress watch the GOLD 1908 would work and compared to the others in the class they are fairly priced..but sense I seldom am out of jeans and my Bass Boat a dress watch isnt going to happen ..But I like it..

Agreed, my opportunities to wear one is slim.

Yeah but there is the fact that I live in New Zealand and said watch is $34,300 NZ. Way too much money but then so is the Calatrava. 😉

That's another good point. A gold 1908 would rock with a well tailored suit but I never wear suits. I don't even own one.

I was going to say, anything in that category is going to cost a lot more to get I imagine, but you get to live in New Zealand, so it is a decent trade-off.

Customer - Screw you, Rolex!!! I’m buying Tudor!!!

Rolex - Yes, please.

I really like the new OP 😊 I guess it will be hard to get, I might have given it a go

Fair enough! That polka dot dial is just too busy for me. The joys of Aspergers.

·

I actual thought it was a good release year for them but that OP is real bad as a OP 41 green dial owner I actually hate it and feels it belittles my watch instead of paying respect to it. YM I like but it’s over priced by about 5k. Not the best hear but better than some years.

I know cost is individual to everyone’s circumstance. But yes, you may have lost perspective if you think 22k US is reasonable?!

Even with 22mil in the bank I would still go you are taking the piss.

My pal just recently dropped 17k GB on a Batman… My response, are you taking the piss?😲

It is reasonable in comparison, not life, and there in lies the difference. This is a hobby where we are all spending money on a completely unnecessary item. Nothing in the hobby is reasonable or logical.

The basis of the position is it is in a class with watches with arguably inferior tech/design that cost $10k+ more. By that basis of comparison, it is exceptionally reasonable. The person cross-shopping this vs. a VC Calatrava may find more value in a $22K item, than a $30K+ item. Kind of like comparing an Emira with a GTS Cayman. Both are well out of reach of the everyday person, but for the sake of comparison, it is fair game.

It's a nice watch but come on.

For that money, I'd go VC or ALS.
