Scratched Timepieces!

What are your thoughts about getting scratches on your watches?

Do you avoid wearing certain watches when you know your planing to be more physical or less in harsh environments or both?

My opinion:

I have a “Watches where made to be warn” kind of attitude for the most part honestly.

In fact I believe fully that when you personally scratch a watch case or bracelet it becomes part of your personal journey with the Watch and adds personal value. And if I really want the watch to ever be restored I know I can always take it to be polished or laser really bad dings. BUT!

When it comes to buying watches used, I do not want another man’s battle marks on the watch.

NOW!

The crystal is a whole other ball game people. If I get a bad scratch on my crystal I won’t be able to sleep at night until I get that fixed asap.

Admittedly I have never ran into an issue with sapphire glass at all.

But I definitely had to use Polywatch on acrylic or mineral Watch. But I still will were those watches without hesitation. Am I careful? Yea as much as can be before it sucks the joy of wearing the watch because what is the point then!?

Post the watch in your collection that has the worst scratches or dings in a reply.

What say you on scratches?

I'm pretty carefull with my watches and will use a G-Shock if I supect my day will get a bit rough.

But, when it does happen I get a bit upset. After a few days I kind of come to terms with the damage, specially if the damage is to the case or bracelet.

Sounds all reasonable to me. I admit I still get a little upset as well but I do try to shrug it off asap

I’m with you on "made to be worn" so general scratches scratches etc don’t bother me at all, however a scratched crystal really winds me up.

Of course if you were to sell a premium brand you could always polish them out 👍🏻

The horror!!!

Yea I mean realistically anything can be fixed.

Just the crystal scratch is always a harder eye sore so it winds me up too.

·

Exactly and I think we all prepare for it for the most part. Like if my tasks for today was to carry boulders and smash big rocks into Little Rocks with my hands I’m not wearing my 1950 vintage watch.

·

I'm generally careful when wearing any of mine, but they are there to be worn. Polywatch is fabulous! I know I have to fix up one, I think it's one of the Neptunes, but obviously it's not bothering me too much at the moment.

·

Yea I always prepare a beater watch for such an occasion

but I can’t help it when a door knob ninja come out of no where or someone decides to move my high rise brick building a few inches over and I just catch the corner of it. 😅

I recently was putting up displays of veneer stone that are heavy so I’ll admit I brought with me a case to take off my new tissot watch but I ended up scratching it anyways so meh I’m over stressing it.

Polywatch is from the Watch gods

Have you been wearing the watch you scratched?

Cuz if it’s in the draw then yea you can forget it.

Put it on your wrist for the day and let me know if you reached for the poly before the sun goes down 🤣

You have a nice watch collection bro And

I’m jacking your double bracelet “top & bottom” Watch style most likely

Just thought I should mention it so when I post it ur not like 😲

·

For the most part, I wear them without reservation…except for my JLC. That generally doesn’t get worn unless I’m wearing long sleeves to help protect the case. As it’s a dressier watch anyway, it isn’t really much of an issue.

·

Do you avoid wearing certain watches when you know your planing to be more physical or less in harsh environments or both?

Absolutely. I own 8 watches for a reason. If I'm going into a certain environment where I'm just as happy wearing a $100 watch as a $3000 watch, why on earth would I wear the latter? It seems quite pointless behaviour me. In fact it seems quite macho and almost arrogant... "I'll f-up this expensive watch, because I can..." That said, I'm equally at ease that, 'accidents can happen' and if I was to drop, scratch, or somehow damage an expensive watch, so be it. I'm not going to cry over an accident. But actively making the choice to go into an environment where that risk is higher and I don't have to do it? That's just nuts to me.

·

I like polishing, cleaning, and sorting things out. So I am both a bit OTT when I scratch mine, and also when it comes to second hand watches, or even one’s inherited or passed down to me.

In most cases, I will also be there with my polishing cloths and mineral oil on a ‘new’ watch, just to you know, make sure it has a good start — and if I am tasked with fixing a watch, or changing battery, or adjusting a strap, it’s a point of honour it goes back to its owner looking at least a little better and cleaner than it arrived.

Unless I accidentally kill it. Which has been known to happen.

I think I’ll try to creat that habit my self to make it a subconscious action too.

I appreciate your feed back!

Your JLC is a clean gentleman look.

The hands are fancy in an interesting way. I can see that being worn with jeans and a white T as well.

cota123

I avoid the automatics during activities such as tennis. For that a G-Shock

That makes a whole lot of sense to me. I mean they where created for such an occasion so why not dress accordingly right?

·
Mr.Santana

Just push it down

I try

·

I have some scratches on my beaters and I'm perfectly fine with that. When I chipped the bezel of my dress watch though (and one that has the most emotional value of my collection) I was pretty upset ngl

Yea if that watch means a lot to you it might be worth the repair on the damage down the road.

I try to wear specific watches for specific occasions. If I’m in a meeting and all dressed up or hanging out in town and know I won’t be roughing up a piece I’ll wear my nicer stuff like the Milgauss for example. If I’m gonna be working I’m gonna be wearing pieces I don’t mind getting a hit.

But seeing a nice watch with wear on it is kinda cool! Gives character and tells a story! I just prefer not to do that with my finer pieces.

I have an Oris Bronze watch that I like and at first didn’t want to mess it up, but now that the bronze has tarnished I don’t mind getting a scratch or scuff on the bracelet. Gives it more character. As long as the crystal stays clean!

·
Mr.Santana

Nice

I guess your just naturally a carful man who doesn’t go parcoring with your watches 😆

Naturally careful? Not really but thanks for the compliment.

It really comes down to respecting the watch and trying to avoid damaging it. Doesn't always work but.... 😀

Yes there is a balance and targeted time pieces for different situations. I also have a bronze custom seiko that I love seeing patina over time and if it get a few battle scars I wouldn’t mind. It will be cool to have a piece that looks like that salvaged at the bottom of the ocean ya know.

But definitely a clear crystal is the way.

The scratches just hurt to see

·

To be honest I love earning my scratches so much that I’m slightly disappointed about my new ceramic Bell&Ross being essentially scratch proof. Watches are most certainly antiqueated, but the tale of this little trinket on my wrist transcends that in a way, and scratches are bookmarks for some of my life’s finest moments. They all add up to make it MY watch, and not just another watch.

With that said, I cannot stand scratches on the sapphire. I still want to read the time without it being a pain!

·

Rolexes are tool watches made to take a pounding, but I understand the reflex to protect it.

“Scratches are bookmarks for some of my life’s finest moments.” 🤯

That’s the sickest way I have ever hear it put. Poetry

Congrats on the Bell&Ross that’s a big boy watch and I love how they matched the color of the date wheel with the dial 🙏🏾

So far I think we are all united on the idea that the crystal is a no fly zone for a scratch lol.

Thanks! I’m honestly very surprised how much I love this Bell & Ross, the design language just speaks to me. It’s unique and not trying to be anyone else, what a fresh concept in this world.

Fresh and rare concept indeed.
