Who thinks collaborations between watch websites like Fratello and Revolution with Watchmakers is an odd element of the industry?

I always thought this is probably one of the weirdest elements of the watch industry. Forget 1916 and De Bethune since they are the same company. But seeing luxury brands like Parmigiani offering an exclusive dial at the Revolution store or Minase offering a formerly Japan exclusive model through Fratello or Hodinkee partnering with up and coming Trilobe seems like a bizarre facet of the industry. It feels like by doing so these websites are "picking sides" on which brands they will talk up and promote more if they partner with these sites.

Hype train drivers one and all….🚂😂

Excuse to jack up the prices..... Look at the overpriced shite Hodinkee push out 😂😂

It's the same as how auto magazines are dependent on auto advertising and loaner cars. Objectivity is basically impossible.

Watch media are more like partners to the watch industry than anything else. It makes sense from a business perspective. It is a great way to make money as a promoter of different watch companies. In our heads we like to think of media as being a check on whatever industry or topic they cover, but in reality it doesn't work that way and it never really has.

Even this site "sells watches" indirectly. Its all one big machine. Watches need media to access an audience. Media needs watches for content. Sites like this scratches an itch. In turn it creates consumer demand. Circle of life, baby.

It's not odd because incest is more widespread than admitted.

1916 and Debethune are same company?! Wow, didn’t know that

Yes good points.

I always took it to mean that the collab company (say Hodinkee or W&W or a shop like Topper) brings the design idea , the watchmaker brings the build capability- and a happy partnership is born

But definitely can’t trust a review article on a watch that that very website collabed on!
