Review: My first 'real' watch!

I'm new here fellow crunchies and I figured, as a sort of introduction I will share with you my first time seriously diving into the watch hobby!

I'm not necessarily new to wearing watches. In fact I got my first yellow Casio from my grandmother when I was about 8 years old and have been wearing watches ever since. The Casio I still need to dig out of my stuff in the attic back at my parents place...

Between then and now there have been various cool pieces, from fashion watches to the Fromanteel piece my parents bought me for graduation to a nice blacked out Skagen watch my wife got me.

However, all of these are quartz pieces and my engineering training probably is a testament to my interest in mechanics, and last year finally came the point where I started thinking about a mechanical watch. From the pictures and tags you already know it is a piece by Nomos. From first laying eyes on their designs I knew I had to have one at some point.

When starting to study watches, I quickly realized I prefered specific details like Arabic over roman numerals, slim and thin looking designs, blued hands and transparant casebacks.

What I found out over time though, is that actually, the thing that is most important to me is the movement. This cemented my conviction of buying from Nomos because they do it so well! And it is how I landed on a Tangente Neomatik. I often find myself taking of the watch and gazing throught that caseback and studying the motions of the balance spring and rotor.

I currently use it as my daily wear and find it runs only a couple of seconds a day fast, which I found online to be common but didn't expect given the price point and lack of certification. Another big plus there!

As this is a review, I will give you some of my worries with this watch. One thing I found is the blued hands vary in color quite significantly between watches. Mine turn black quite often given lighting conditions. Not a major gripe for me but as I really like the deep blue hue, I do look for the right angle to look at my watch...

The other thing worth mentioning is the case is a true scratch magnet. The sharp angles and high polish finish make this watch isn't for beating around if you mind them bruises. Me, I wear it every day and try not to worry too much :-)

My conclusion: I absolutely adore this piece, and would recommend it to anyone who recognizes some of my thoughts above! I'm very curious to learn your thoughts on this well known model by NOMOS!

  • Stark, modern design
  • Arabic numerals and blued hands
  • Possibly the prettiest movement at this price point
  • Inhouse, proprietary watchmaking inside
  • Scratch magnet
  • Looks are sensitive to lighting conditions

That's a great watch. I had been planning on adding one to my collection (the silvercut version), but I had hesitated because of the length of the lugs, and then the local AD stopped carrying them. I sill keep my eye out for a good pre-owned version at the right price.

Heat blued hands will always change color from blue to black depending on the light, so I personally consider that a pro rather than a con.

I have a 16cm wrist and could have done with a strap that's slightly shorter, but the lugs work really well for me! I'd recommend to try one on if you get the chance.

This is a 38mm case but they carry 35mm as well!

Nomos is a wonderful watch brand, and well welcome to the site

·

Welcome and the Tangente is a great watch from a great brand. My only con to add here is the long lugs for such a compact well built watch.

I was browsing and saw your post. I registered just so I could tell you that I bought my Nomos Tangente over 20 years ago and I still have it. In fact, I'm wearing it right now as I type this.

Congratulations and wear it in good health.

Beautiful. Walter Gropius would approve.

·

Welcome to WC! That Nomos is beautiful

·

Welcome! Great first mechanical watch. My first love is the Ahoi datum. Agree that they're scratch magnets, but that's how you know something's been loved!

FYI, the lugs on most of the Neomatickodels are less exagerated than the, the non-Neomatik lugs. For instance this Neomatik (38.5mm diameter) has 47.3mm lug to lugs against the 47.7mm dimensions of the Tangente 38 (37.5mm diameter).

Hello,has your nomos been reliable?

The mainspring broke once and needed repair. Other than that it's been a workhorse. While I'm not one to obsessively check the accuracy, I've worn it countless times in the last 20 years and it seems to keep excellent time.

Did you have to pay for main spring repair?

Did you have to pay for main spring repair?

It was a long time ago, so I'm hazy on the details. But I imagine I did pay. The watch would have been 6 or 7 years old at that point, so long out of warranty.

I bought it from Wempe in NYC, so that's where I took it for repair. I believe they fixed it themselves rather than send it back to Germany.

Got it,where in NY is wempe?

Excellent, insightful review of a beautiful watch! Thanks!🤙❤️

Thanks for a nice review.

It would be tough but if I had to pick just one out of my collection, this would be it, for all the reasons you mentioned. Simple, elegant, superb workmanship.

I had no clue about this...great to know. Any idea why this is?
