To sell or not to sell

Last year I signed up for the Studio Underd0g sale window alert. I wanted to buy their watermelon watch. I did. About half an hour later I thought I would buy the Mint Choc Chip one as well. I did not know which one I preferred and I did not know if I would have another opportunity to get it. Now a few months later, I find myself wanting to buy a Christopher Ward but I can't justify so many watches. I started this hobby in June last year and I already have 8 watches. I think that now one has to go. I am quite conflicted though. Customs hit me with $290 at the time both watches arrived. eBay takes 15% of the sale. I don't want to sell at a loss. And, deep inside, I am really hesitant about selling it. Never worn, still in the box as it came. The watermelon will definitely be the quirky piece in my small collection, but I am afraid a few years from now I will regret selling the mint choc one. I really need to think about this one...

I don’t know if you will sell at a loss. Those are in some high demand but even if it is a possibility don’t think it’ll be much of a loss.

·

If you have doubts don’t sell the pieces, as long as it is not a money issue just buy a bigger watch box 😁

Haha. No it's not a money issue. I am a very frugal guy and even though most of my watches were bought used on eBay, the guilt of so many is starting to nag my soul ;)

I do need to do a bit more thinking. I wrote the listing today but could not bring myself to let it go online yet.

Sellers remorse is far worse than buyers remorse

Probably does not help you but its the best ive got😀

I’m not a big fan of Underdog but they’re very nice. I would keep them if I was you.

I do like the odd/quirky vibe. It would not be "the watch" if I had to choose one though.

·

If you don’t have a financial urge to sell it, as you have pointed out, and you are just counter balancing a sense of guilt…keep it in the box and look at it as an investment. Maybe few years from now will be worth more or much more and, if you sell something else, you might keep the two SUD with you…don’t act out of an impulse Joel.

·

Hmmm… how much for the watermelon?

·

I personally prefer the Mint Choc, but both look wonderful. As to your buying, what might honestly help is to just take a break from all watch media. (Instagram, Reddit maybe, even this site!). It's hard to feel like you constantly want something if you don't see it as much, I feel

If you DO plan to sell them down the line, r/watchexchange is a great place to do it. People there know the value of stuff and won't harangue you for a price that might seem too high, best of luck man

·

If you can sell at a profit go for it.

·

Might be hard to sell at a profit with the $290 and 15%. If you don’t have to sell, keep them. Most watches don’t appreciate in value.

That one I am not selling for sure.

Thank you for the tip on watch exchange. Good point made on taking a break too. So many cool watches ;)

Yeah, meca quarts are cool if you are into them

But the novelty may wear off as you grow in your journey (maybe I'm not a fortune teller 😆 )

I like mechanical watches, especially when it comes to Chronos, but my passion for watches has always started with movement first and design second, but that is not by any means a right or wrong way to do it

If you would like to stay mechanical

Search in Ali Express for a Seagull 1963 watch and spend some time going through the watches. Many listings offer multiple alternate color schemes

You can get lost for hours

Great video. I watched the first. I understand the true GMT is more refined/complex, that it "deserves" being more expensive, but the aesthetics of the watch also matters and in my case, I don't travel much. Both accomplish the same thing, sort of. I really like the CW aesthetics, not going to lie. All that said, I learned something today, thank you.

I admit I did not know the difference between the two types of GMT. I live in OR, but I am from Portugal. I always track the Portuguese time in my phone. I would track it on a GMT as well, so I would go for the caller GMT I suppose. Great video. Subscribed.

Also, keep in mind that Seiko makes caller GMT mechanical watches for under $400 😆

So that's another thing that changed the market 😆

If you love the sea Lander, go for it

It's not my favorite CW, but it's very nice

But you may want to browse the Joma shop and see what other Swiss caller GMT watches are out there that are around USD 800

For example, this Ball Caller GMT

https://www.jomashop.com/ball-trainmaster-voyager-gmt-automatic-black-dial-mens-watch-gm1050d-s1aj-bk.html

One last thing: with a travel GMT, you can set your home time to Portugal and make your travel time Oregon time :)

The caller is not as versatile, lol

I think it was just a marketing gimmick that worked when those were the only types of GMT watches under $3k

Either way, go with your Hart. I had to go through an entire drawer of watches to get so picky 😆

Discovering all these things on your own is part of the journey :)

Yeah, there's no wrong or right choice

It is more about having the info. If your feelings don't change with the information, then you know that you won't regret it later

I got my Grail watch a few months ago after 4 years of collecting 45mm 15mm thickness. Most watch fans will tell you that's insane, lol

But it's perfect for “me” I love everything about it, especially the movement and complications :)

Dood!

Yes, that is nice!!!

That is one of the things I love about collecting. There's something extraordinary to get at every price range

I love my Seikos, lol

I have an alpinist, my gmt presage, and my white dial King samurai

The White dial King Samurai is one of the best everyday tool watches you can get, maybe only topped by that Maratac DC-50 😆

The Maratac is insane. I write articles online once in a while and I get paid for some of them. That's how I bought the Seiko Pressage GMT. That Maratac is now on my list to get with the money from that hobby.

Its super under the radar but it's a spec monster

Theres a reason it took my 4 years

Other wise it really wouldn't be a grail you know 😆

Couple questions you should really ask yourself

Why haven't you worn it?

If your not going to wear it, then why keep it?

Does selling it make any difference to your financially? I don't mean if course I'll receive x amount for it. What I'm asking here is does recieving that amount make any difference to your life?

What will you do with the money once sold?

Once you answer these questions, you'll know what too doo

Never sell your watches .. keep them ..😊

Why have I not worn it? Even with "only" 8 watches in my collection, it's a little too many to wear them all consistently. Also a bit of guilt for having spent "so much" on watches since June. My frugality is playing the devil vs angel in my mind.

No, selling does absolutely nothing. If it affected me, I would have bigger problems and I would need to forget watches entirely. Although I can afford it, I think of a even a $500 watch as luxury. I was raised in a very frugal home. This stuff still plays in my mind to be honest. This may sound crazy, I have lived in the EUA for over a decade and my brain still defaults to Portugal's economic reality where I think I make "obscene" amounts of money. Minimum wage in Portugal when I left was $650 a month! I now make more money than I ever imagined. I often feel I am paid way too much... Psychology is interesting sometimes.

If I sold it, I would put the money towards another watch, the CW C63 Sealander. I am finding it very hard to justify so many watches. However, I should probably pause a few months at this point to just enjoy the watches I have.

Sorry for the psychological therapy here ;) I was actually lying on a couch. This was a true Freudian moment, except that I am not seeing any sexual connection to watches, but maybe I am wrong ahahahah

·

I bought the same two watches. Too small on my wrist, so they sit in the safe. May take them out in the summer.
