I did what I never said I'd do: I bought a Seiko... Again!

This is the second of Seiko 5s I have purchased from Jomashop in the past few weeks. The first was an SNXS73 that a very pleasant surprise (see that post here: https://www.watchcrunch.com/wruw/2023-06-26#comment-558457).

I've constantly complained about Seiko not giving you much for the money, i.e. no sapphire and a basic 4R35 movement on a $300+ watch, but with the classic 5 series I have had to humble myself and eat some of those words. At $119 shipped, you can't beat it for a made-in-Japan classic Seiko 5.

I'm being a bit of a hypocrite, seeing as how to most the 7S26 is outdated given the entry level movements Seiko is producing these days. It has its place, though, like Jody from Just One More Watch on YouTube pointed out in the video below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gW6pjv9x4w8

Still, the classy look and clean layout of the SNXS range of Seiko 5s never goes out of style, and if you wear it often enough, you'll never run out of power reserve. If I go a day between wearing it, I will give it 30 seconds to a minute of the "Seiko Shuffle" a few times a day to power it up until it next adorns my wrist.

So, I guess I have proven I am not too proud to humble myself by admitting I was wrong about something, although my wife would disagree, but for anyone contemplating a classy piece that can be worn dressed up or down, give the SNXS range a look.

I've been grabbing some of these classic Seiko 5s myself while they're still available. They're different from what we're used to getting today, but still nice, good looking watches, and can still be had for a good price (for now).

Part of me wishes they went back and updated this range instead of revamping the SKX lineup. Have these hack, hand wind, and put a sapphire crystal on them would be great.

But then they wouldn't be able to charge $100-$150 bucks for them, and they'd jack it up to how the new Seiko 5's are (i.e. $200+).

Jomashop has a great sale going on for the summer (in no way am I affiliated or promoting them). I can't believe how much more expensive the 5s are compared to just last year. Less than 12 months ago I was looking at some classic Seiko 5s on Amazon that were just around $100. A few weeks ago I went to look at some to consider a new purchase, and they were easily 50% more. I think it's a pretty good darn deal to get a Japanese-made SNXS79 for right around $120.

Joma has some killer deals on the older series 5 7s movements at the moment.

Sad I missed their $99(🤯) SNK381, aka Raider Rolex, earlier this year.

Also, this sadly means the new stuff is slowly leaving the market. Outside Japan's immediate sphere of retail influence.

Anyone needing to try an integrated bracelet, they have multiple SeikoRX's if you will under $150US.

You can't go wrong with the SNXS79. It's a legend.

It'll also look good on a center-polished oyster bracelet, a hexad bracelet, and a Jubilee bracelet. 👍🏼👍🏼

Congrats and enjoy! 🍻

I agree, these Seiko 5’s look way more expensive than they are and will be ticking in 25-30 years if looked after, here three I’ve had.

I put my SNXS73 on a cheap brushed oyster and it elevated the look substantially. I'm debating a jubilee or the brushed outer/polished center like the one on yours. The one you have looks like a more sturdy and chunky bracelet than the ones I'm looking at on AliExpress. In the photos below, you can see the difference in the clasps on the USDM (left) vs. JDM (right) SNXS7x.

I missed their Made in Malaysia Seiko 5 😛 . It cost me less than $50. Of course, I got what I paid for (I paid for 2... How dare you suggest you can stop buying Seiko!). One stopped working when I looked at it without appropriate adoration. The other stopped when I opened the caseback (I think it got shy and shut me down). But hey, it's only $50. Who cares?

That brushed oyster on your SNXS73 looks cool. Get both the center-polished oyster and the jubilee! 😎

Get also a President... 😉

@Iluvhomages Really love the Seiko you got. Interestingly enough, I’m also planning to buy an SNXS but am confused between 2 models. The SNXS79K1 and and the J1 variant that you got.

Can you please tell me if there are any differences that I should take into consideration? The price difference is negligible at only $6 dollars. But I’m really confused about which one should I get.

One is cased in and has a movement made in Japan. The other has one that may be made in Malaysia or another country and cased somewhere else as well. Also, they use different languages for the day/date complication. One has English/Spanish and the other is English/Arabic, if I recall correctly.

That's not to say the quality of movements varies widely based on the country of origin, but for some it's just cool to have a JDM or Made in Japan version of a Seiko.

They use the same 7S26C movements, so it's up to you whether you think the few extra dollars for the Japan version is worth it. I think so, but to each their own.
