How do you go about watch servicing?

Watch servicing is something we can't escape from especially when owning a mechanical watch.

So when is the right time to service a watch:

When it has completely stopped working

Or

After it has been functioning for sometime like 3 to 5 years maybe?

Or

Depends on how much it cost you. If it was cheap then

you don't give a shit surely but if it's expensive you're

the insecure type and want it to remain perfect

When it shows signs of needing a service.

Things like changes in timekeeping, odd gritty feeling when winding, crown threads stripped, anything unusual.

I'm in the "If it ain't broke. don't fix it" school.

I use a timegrapher to keep tabs on beat error and amplitude. (I'm not one for worrying too much about accuracy). If it's an expensive watch it gives me a heads up to think ahead to servicing, rather than have it come as a surprise.

I'm going to start learning servicing so that I can keep the cheaper ones running myself.

·

Only send mine away when they're not working or running so badly I notice in a day.

·

When I next break it!

·

As above but I’ll add do your research on who will be doing the service. Bad experiences are no fun.

·

The only thing I routinely service is my car as I need it to be reliable! I get things done as and when they’re needed

I’m frozen in fear over getting my Panerai 233 gmt serviced. No question it can use some care. Still haven’t decided what to do.

I think the real question is whether to send to the manufacturer for service or go with a local watchmaker. If under warranty, I would send it off to the AD. However, I've also found a local watchmaker who has worked for Rolex and Omega; so he's getting all my watches that are outside warranty.

Every five years, or max seven if you are willing to take the risk of major repair.

·

If I've been wearing a modern automatic watch regularly for five years, and it's worth $2000 or more, I start to think about servicing.

Service to 100$ is cheap for a Watch every 4-5 years.

A car worth 40-50k $ and you take service every 10-20k km to 3-400$ each time.

I would spend some love for the Watch. Better maintenance - Will not be expensive in the long run. Same in car.

Never ,ever encountered a full service for 100 bucks. And if I did I wouldn't let them touch it.

You get what you pay for and any experienced, reliable watchmaker will charge that as a bench charge just to look at the watch.

It was an example.

I spend HUGE on cars. Its about priorities on what’s important.
