I'm Dayton Taylor: a photographer, filmmaker, and visual effects technology developer in Switzerland. I have a YouTube channel, @IShoot Watches, on which I cover my own "watchmaking" as well as industry history and events in Switzerland.
I inherited my dad's 1962 Rolex 1603 SS DateJust when my dad died when I was 12 years old (in 1976).
Q: What was the first watch you ever owned?
First one I remember was a new LCD Timex, but I know there were precursors. LCD! LIQUID CRYSTALS! AYFKM? Transparent charged plates, polarizing filters. And some LIQUID CRYSTALS in between that became cross-polarized when a very slight voltage was applied to the transparent plates. I got it, and I was mesmerized.
Q: Do you have a watch with a particularly interesting story behind it?
The Timex? Just kidding. My dad's Rolex. I drove suicidally fast when I was in my teens and regularly caught myself unconsciously looking at it when the adrenaline kicked in at those high speeds. I knew it was a portal to the other side and I wanted to go through it.
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone just getting into watches?
Don't let the flexing culture ruin a good thing.
Q: What brands have been getting your attention lately?
Dead ones mostly, as those that remain alive have largely turned into brainless cash hungry zombies run by bankers. I do still love Rolex but I've never bought one for myself and I doubt that I ever will.
