Cuz they’ve convinced the public that they are “better”
They are expensive and exclusive because people expect them to be expensive and exclusive.
Clothes, bags, pens, makeup, jewelry, shoes, homes, cars, appliances, underwear, alcohol, water, food, knives, guns. All industries have the “expensive” stuff even though that stuff isn’t any better than from the value brands. But we humans are stupid.
Finishing, decoration, and complication. None of which do anything for a movement’s performance or longevity (except for cost in repairs and servicing).
I wouldn’t worry about a watch’s movement unless you have $5000+ to spend. If you have that much coin right now and are a watch nerd, then pick a watch with the fanciest and prettiest finished movement you can find.
I truly hope you won’t let a bunch of knuckle-heads on a forum decide how to spend your twenty grand! Thanks for the privilege though!

To dressy for casual wear. Looks very effeminate without a jacket or blazer.
I wear a colorful 34mm Timex Marlin Snoopy Christmas watch around the house, but won’t go out or visit friends with it… people don’t notice your watch until it appears that a grown-ass man is wearing a little girl’s first watch.
Do what you want (and enjoy it!) but people WILL wonder why you are wearing a woman’s watch. Yes, it’s technically a man’s watch, but nobody outside of watch forums believes that.
I love Fossils. I believe many watch hobbyists do too. crisp, clean, affordable, available, reliable, modest (though too large for my taste anymore). Hate just comes from snobbery over their ubiquity.
