Hot Take (but not really): Stop comparing to Rolex

In response to those enthusiasts and/or collectors that can't stand Rolex and cannot understand why they are priced so "high" or are considered to have such "value" when other watch brands and makers have better finishing, pricing, accuracy, etc. etc., my response is to just stop comparing it to Rolex. The more that these watches and makers are compared to Rolex, the more firm Rolex's position at the top will remain. I mean by comparing something to an industry standard, basically just solidifies it as the standard bearer.

Hype up the watch on its own merits, but don't compare to Rolex by pulling Rolex down to pull itself up. You'll only end up being a crab in a bucket (\/) (°,,,,°) (\/)

If you're just comparing to the big R for the clicks and views, I totally understand since that is the current world we live in, sadly.

Until clicks and views aren't a thing, we're stuck with every headline having "Rolex" in it whether it really applies or not.

Good points well made.

I couldn't agree more!

At least we don't have to deal with terrible shocked or "O-face" thumbnails or whatnot 😮

If you make a review talking about a watch, you benchmark it against Rolex because both long-time enthusiasts and newbies will know something about what you're comparing the watch to. If you make a video comparing a watch against a JLC, only people who know Swiss luxury brands will have any idea what you're talking about.

When I was a kid, people used Cadillac as a comparison when talking about cars, because even grandma knew what Cadillac was. If back than someone said that their new Ford had better acceleration than an Alpha Romeo, nobody but diehard gearheads would know what they were talking about.

The point is they are the industry standard to most common folk. You can’t not use a base of some sort when comparing and it just happens to be Rolex.

When I see titles that say “Better than Rolex for Thousands Less”, my first reaction is:

Stop lying!!! Why are you lying???

However, those of us that genuinely don’t want/like/care about Rolex. ME for one, don’t actually do what you are saying. It’s the people that want/like/can’t afford/can afford who are causing the issues.

Only Rolex I want is the RE1. I won’t lose sleep over it.

Haters hate. Jealousy and bitterness will rule in these type of mindsets, if it wasn’t watches. It would be something else.

Rolex are the masters of PR/spin/advertising just like Coca Cola,Nike. Offer the lifestyle, for many with wealth or not offer the dream and they will come. It’s been the ultimate Jedi mind trick. You can apply it to anything.
