..It's a small watch after all, it's a small, small, waaatch!

The new watch isn't actually that small at 39mm, but that blasted song has been stuck in my head for a few days now

The Fieldwalker Socal vacay was fantastic!

Image

Watch related highlights: an NWA, I viewed some Habring2 watches in person, and I visited with my kind friend (and our sites most charitable soul) @Mr.Dee.Bater!

However, being on a trip mostly devoted to family, it wasn't all horologic goodness. Not much freedom to geek out.

I missed out on the plethora of high end watch salons in LA. I missed out on an Orange County Chrono get together that Jack @FlatteryCamp was kindly going to sneak me into. I missed Paul’s @TheHoroSexual Montage Crunch meetup that happened the same night I arrived 😢

Ok, Back to the highlights:

A GS acquisition: The Ryusendo aren't just caves in Iwate prefecture anymore!

Image

Preamble - I love watches with a date complication, very useful at work. I don't like dress watches. I prefer watches with 200m WR (big safety factor always appreciated) but fine with 100m and a screw crown (i.e. the SBGA413 Shunbun ) and I dislike watches with push pull crowns and 100m or less WR. At least In my mind, I dislike dress watches.

So, this watch is dead wrong for @Fieldwalker... but...I lean peacock when given the choice. And am an unabashed GS fan. In this case, the peacock power of this watch overpowers all other concerns and crushes them under it's little 3 toed foot.

Image
Image

I am also gaga for the case - it's inspired by a powered up jib or mainsail and is wrist hugging and absolutely beautiful.

58 grams on strap! I love light, and this one is light alright. My GS Shunbun, in Ti, also a lightweight wonder, is 2 grams heavier! (ok, the 413 has a rotor, so it gets a pass on the extra 2 gm)

Yes, just regular stainless case and it's a mechanical hand wind movement. However, I value design and style, and this watch has it in spades 🤩

Image

Watch also came with a framed degree, which I plan to hang on the wall.

Image

As my first mechanical GS - the degree might actually be nothing special, but the spring drive GSs I'm familiar with don't have it, the undereducated watches they are.

2) Visiting with Brandon of Horology by the Sea. He’s the distributor of Habring2 watches. Habring “2” is because it's operated by a loving husband and wife watchmaking team in Austria.

Image

Mechanical and creative genius in the models I saw. In house movement development and has won several GPHG awards, the Felix Top Second most recently. I plan to own a Habring2 someday!

3) Last fun detail - we survived a family day at Disney! $800 CAD for our 3 one day tickets before any food, parking, etc, ouch! 🤕

Some of the rides I remembered from 40 years ago... though with minor modern PC tweaks. Long lines but still silly fun to do again.

Image

Newer rides have embraced technology. The Indiana Jones and Star Wars rides were fantastic and made my day/night.

Image

MAD1 seemed the best choice of a watch for a day of Disney mayhem (it's a MAD world!), it got lots of crazy spinning as the day passed 🤪

Thanks for reading 👍

I love Small World!!!!

·

Hope you had a great time. Disneyland is pretty magical, even though everything has gotten so much more expensive. It’s a unique perspective seeing the Park through your kids’ eyes. Wouldn’t trade it for the world.

·

Thank you for sharing your vacation with us. Great pictures and a stunning GS👌

Omg !

I want it.

I love Small World!!!!

It's mandatory on any Disney visit! Classic artwork from the 50s still basically the same. Only catch - our boat got stuck in the last room - so heard the looped song about 20 times right before leaving 😂

One interesting note - I couldn't believe how small the Matterhorn had become!

It was freaking Everest in my minds 10 yo eye 🤯

Something that stayed the same - the general enormity of the place still was pretty amazing.

Thanks Per!

The family now mostly just laughs when I sneak in a watch shot in any scenic venue 😜

Cheers! thanks Steven.

GSs are so well made. If not for some economic constraints I'd have several more 🙄

·

Glad you had a good trip!!! Let me know when the next one is!!!

It's a bummer we didn't catch you at The Montage, but it seems you had a fantastic time with your family and @Mr.Dee.Bater It's been ages since I last visited Disneyland, and I'm astounded by how much the prices have skyrocketed!

I affectionately call Sleeping Beauty’s castle the “Tiny Castle”. It is small compared to the rest of the castles at the Disney Parks around the world.

Awesome trip with great company, with even greater memories being collected with your timepieces. It really looks like it was a blast! 🙌

Whenever I am at WDW, DLP or Tokyo Disney, I sing my heart out to Small World! Draws bemused looks in Tokyo though! However, nothing moves me like Happily Ever After!!

Love it Paul!

Yes, it’s a cacophony of singing inside there, so no issues if joining in I think 🤙

Tokyo-ites love karaoke so can’t imagine they’re too upset at Tokyo Disney… I’ll try next time we go there 😜

We had a family LOUDLY yelling at each other in Spanish behind us during the ride, and I would’ve loved singing, even poorly, as an alternative

Fantastic NWA write up Alan. Thanks for sharing your vaca! Congratulations, what a mesmerizing dial 💯.
