Becoming an independent watchmaker: Chasing Microns

Image

Great 25 min video from the small team who created Horage.

The video’s name comes from a quote by their chief engineer, who in one scene is explaining...

..a degree or 2 temp change can slightly change a machines tolerance, so it can cause the part they are making to be out by a couple microns. To make watches you must chase microns!

Image

It gives insights into their process of becoming a true watchmaker and the challenges and small victories they’ve had doing so.

They also emphasized how the team, a mathematician, an engineer and a watchmaker work together to create a successful movement (and watch)

Despite sinking about $15 million into developing a movement - they charge ~GS prices. But they aren't the 10x or 20x markup over cost like an Omega or a 2 or 3 markup of typical micro - they charge 1.38x over cost.

So... one kidney! 😉

Any financing available?

Yes - they do a pay 1/2 now 1/2 much later deal, and they are considering offering an even more generous longer smaller payment scheme. No interest. They are a small enough company that you can just email and ask , or ask them on their ‘community’ page

Also, no shipping fees or duty fees. They do a price that’s “all in”.

I was joking about paying in parts of my kidney 🤣🤣

But then you got me intrigued so I check out and the site. Some beauties there.

Definitely - it’s the new Autark (Micro rotor tourbillon) has me super interested, so much so that I’m trying to influence them to add the features I want 😂.. since watch isn’t yet finalized (other than the movement)

Any other 100% Swiss, micro-rotor tourbillon sports watch is 4 to 20x more expensive

You've been talking about horage for a while. So, I read up on it and they are indeed doing some great things for an absurd price. How do they do it??

Wish they changed the font then this would be perfect!

I’ve read some of their Tourbillon 1 blog posts that break down their finances

My understanding is that it’s margins they charge. Industry norm is 7 to 10x. Very low margin small companies can be 3.5.

From their blog:

..but with the support of our community and strict cost control we have calculated a break the bank 1.38 margin for this project.

In case your eyes were deceiving you let me put that in bold 1.38 Markup net without VAT...

We want you to be proud of the investment you have made in a watch that without exaggeration would usually start at around 40.000CHF or beyond from a major watch manufacturer.

I have no stake in the company but I admire their company. Will be proud to get one on my wrist.

BTW, I agree - the grand feu enamel and gold case /salmon bracelet is gorgeous. Also like unique Arabic numerals, my issue is more not liking dress watches 😜

You think better with breguet style?

Interesting. Then this is indeed a steal for consumers if you're into their watches.

I think it would look great with either a fancier sans serif font or breguet numerals, but I guess they're a bit modern in their overall style. I'm definitely going to keep an eye on them.
