NWA - My First G-Shock

(With apologies to @SpecKTator for the delay)

So after dithering a ridiculous amount of time over a just- under $100 purchase, I finally got the GW-M5610U. Some rambling first impressions and thoughts behind my purchase:

I'm glad I went with this model rather than one of the Casioaks - it doesn't feel bulky, is comfortable, and not particularly obstrusive all things considered. It's maybe even slightly elegant? I really like the classic design, and the bits of color on the display feel well proportioned. To me, this is as appropriate as a smartwatch to wear to the office.

I initially dithered because I already have a digital Casio that is my beater - mainly for the gym - and being the tightwad I am, felt I couldn't justify another digital Casio. But of course the watch-rationalization bit of my brain eventually kicked in. The need to track another time zone popped up for me recently, so I started thinking about GMTs (subject of another post). But then I remembered that the G-Shock has multiple time zones, so I figured that I could both scatch my G-Shock itch (that doesn't sound quite right) and get GMT functionality, for much less than the GMTs I was considering. Such is the convoluted thinking of a cheapskate with progressing watch enthusiasm....

Anyway, I'm really happy with joining the G-Shock club. But perversely for this watch, I'm also keen to keep it pristine - I just like how it looks! So I'll probably keep using the other Casio as my gym watch for now. I also haven't given up on a proper GMT - waiting to see what else issues this year.

I included a photo of the manual because it looked absurdly thick. Turns out that's mostly due to multiple language versions. But there's also apparently a more detailed manual online. So I probably have lots of random button pressing to figure out features in my future.

Finally, just for kicks, here's the caseback:

Excellent choice you can’t go wrong with! I’m a huge believer everyone should have a square g shock in their collection. Hopefully your first not your last!

I might yet get a Casioak, maybe in metal, notwithstanding my reservations about size. Glad this was my intro though!

Good choice! I got mine for Christmas 2022 and my daughter took it with her when she moved across the country this summer… I missed having a solar atomic watch and picked up a locally available model (MTG-M900DA-8) and customized it with a different band:

Very neat! Was swapping the strap difficult? I'm already thinking ahead to if/ when the strap may wear out (who knows how many years later) or maybe just changing it out for fun. Is it as simple as undoing those screws at the lugs (or whatever the equivalent is for G-Shocks)?

Depending on the model, strap swaps either require 1 or 2 jeweler screwdrivers and the available straps to change are typically limited - for the 5610, there are a few NATO conversion kits and the watch will take many of the resin, metal, or combi link bracelets designed for the 5000/5600 series.

For my MTG-M900, strap choices were limited to the original SS band, black PVD-coated metal bands from the MTG-900/M900 series, and rubber/resin bands from the similarly-shaped GW-500, GW-530, GW-M500, and GW-M530.
