An addendum to my initial post on getting the SPB121: Got my new strap today from a brand called Morellato, advertised as vegan leather. I know nothing about leather so maybe it's lacking compared to the real thing, but I'm perfectly happy with the look and especially feel of the material. Certainly more comfortable than the real leather Seiko strap! And now the wearing experience of the watch head is terrific - sits flat, balanced, doesn't seem overly chunky at all. Very happy with the strap and especially how it works with the Alpinist!

They had to kill a lot of Naugas to make that Naugahyde strap. Naugahyde was big 40 years ago and the vegan movement is bringing it back.

I had to look that up to get that - thought you were serious for a minute! I've heard apple peels are the vegan material of choice these days. But I have no idea what it's made of, so you could be right.
