Price estimate? 70s Omega Speedmaster

Anyone know a way to tell a decent price range for this watch? Looks pretty dirty and scratched from the photos. I have not seen it in person yet and don't know if it works. It will be at an estate sale this weekend.

If you offer up to $2000 for it in unknown working condition you can still invest up to $1000 for service, light polish, etc and come in below current market value.

Find a better version and pay a little more. Also, handle in person before buying.

Solid advice. Though if there’s room in the budget sometimes great risk comes with great rewards

More often with avoidable losses. At least that's my "safe" take on things.

I agree, but I would offer even lower and see what happens 🙂

Speedmaster service is $1000 from our local Omega man providing nothing catastrophic has taken place. You can find some nice speedy pros comfortably under 4k that usually need a service, that part almost never gets mentioned. Whoever is selling it has the internet too, they are also looking at its value most likely. Good luck!

I use 3 strategies to find prices.

  1. eBay search for the watch and check the boxes for sold and completed

  2. Chronograph 24

  3. Watch Charts will give you the average market value for a watch in good condition

Like others mentioned, I would not buy this watch. If the exterior looks that bad, I would not trust the care given to the mechanism. I don’t worry about the crystal, hesilite scratches. The bracelet looks meh at best, and the case doesn’t look much better.

People are commenting that he shouldn't buy the watch.

That wasn't even what was asked. He asked about price range.

Wondering if those advising even own a preowned Speedmaster or other chronographs and have any experience at all with having them serviced? I know I do.

It's like asking what's a good price for a burger and someone responding tsk tsk you shouldn't be eating burgers.

I've bought over 300 preowned watches. Most worked out and a few didn't. The more one knows going in the more one should be willing to offer. The less one knows the less one should offer. That's risk vs reward 101.

A hand wind watch without a date complication is perhaps the easiest of watches to assess.

With hand wind watches there is no "it just needs a battery", "it's just a noisy rotor", "the date wheel turns slow on all those models."

One can wind the crown while feeling how smooth it is, observe whether the hands move freely around the dial and if it's a chronograph check the set, stop and reset functions such as does it reset to 12 (if it doesn't it is still not necessarily a deal breaker) and whether the pushers stick.

If one doesn't see the opportunity that exists in preowned watches and only sees the hazards then good for them however that doesn't mean great opportunities don't exist for others.

Would I be willing to handle the Speedy and make an offer based on what I found? You bet! It's not an exotic watch with difficult parts to source. Any competent watchmaker should be able to service one.

BTW I paid $450 last year to have a routine service performed on my Speedmaster by a top notch 5 star independent watchmaker here in L.A. so I've left plenty of room in my estimates for other problems.

It seems like there is an opportunity to score a Speedmaster at well below market value depending on the work needed and the competition present but what do I know?

I love my Speedy and enjoy when people land a good watch at a great price.

I estimate the watch about $2000.00

❤️ it my friend - Omega Speedmaster triple day/date/month 1990's

Don't quote me, but I think I paid right around $2K for this one. Loved its colors and condition for its age.
