NWA: 2008 36mm Oyster Perpetual Black 3-6-9 Dial (Japan Import)

I've been on the list for a 36mm explorer for only a few months, but recently I discovered that I quite like the older OP with the Arabic numerals. I really like the crown and the baton hands more than the triangle and mercedes hand. The problem was I didn't want a blue, silver or black with pink lume, which is mainly what I came across.

Turns out there was a very limited set of 36mm OP that were released and quickly pulled from the catalog because (supposedly) it was too similar to the Explorer. Apparently most of the watches that did make it to market were sold in Japan. While these aren't extremely rare (you can find a few examples online) they are somewhat unique.

So I found this one on Chrono24, sold by a reputable dealer in Tokyo. A week later (after a bit of customs faff) it's on my wrist. And it's everything I'd hoped. It fits like a dream and is what I wanted in a Rolex, understated and elegant and not blingy.

The condition is immaculate as far as I can tell (I even had a thorough look under a high power microscope). I'm going to take it in to a Rolex service centre soon though just for peace of mind. Being from 2008 and no service record, I imagine it probably could use a service.

So I couldn't wait for "the call", but I think I found something I wanted even more. It's not even manufactured anymore so that makes it all the more interesting to me.

But the real question is now: will I still pick up the phone if I do get the call for that Explorer...? 😅

That’s a perfect solution for you. Nice watch and I don’t think you will have the need or desire for the Explorer later judged by your reasoning why you bought the OP.

Wow, I like that - looks so much better without the mercedes hour hand. 😍👏🏻👏🏻

·

Taking it to Rolex? You'll see it again around 2029....

Looks great. The OP also gets you the bigger crown at 12

Not going to lie, I prefer the OP hands over the Mercedes hands of the Explorer. Excellent watch to have picked up. Wear it in good health!

Whoa! Was not expecting lumed Arabic numerals on the OP. Good catch! This, in the big scheme of things, is a rare watch…the OP Explorer that’s not an Explorer

·

Great looking watch! I agree with you, this is the perfect combination between the OP and Explorer. What’s the reference number?

It's just a 116000, no unique reference. The same applies to all the other variants as well.

love it! 🔥

That's a lovely looking watch. I've never liked the Mercedes hour hand on the Explorer, so this is a perfect fix. Shame it's so rare.
