Me not caring about the SKX

I came into all this a few years after it was discontinued, so I have zero emotional attachment to it. The only thing I like about it is that they are fully indexed and the contrast on the dials.

The SKX was popular because Seiko made too many, charged too much, and the ADs dumped them on the grey market for peanuts.

It was always a "meh" watch. It became a watch community darling because you could get them cheap when internet forums were becoming a "thing".

Objectively it's no better than the Citizen counterpart, that was actually popular in dive circles.

I’m the opposite; I bought a SKX013 back in 2015. At the time I thought I just needed one. Thought the bracelet was crap, the movement was crap, power reserve was crap, accuracy was crap … All of those things are true. It is a POS. But it is my favorite POS I’ve ever owned, and the only POS in my collection.

I can understand your lack of emotional attachment, but for me that’s exactly the charm of the watch.

The proportions are perfect. The fit and weight are perfect. The jingly-jangly folded-link jubilee bracelet catches and casts the light in a way that no over-produced “upgrade” premium bracelet can replicate.

It fits every outfit I’ve ever matched it to, from tank top to tuxedo.

For all the wrong reasons I absolutely love it.

But that’s just me.

If this game was all logic and numbers, we have nothing to talk about. Making good sense is for building bridges, airplanes, and governments (theoretically). We all just like wearing little clocks on our wrists because they tug at our monkey brains in funny ways.

Queue the Seiko people saying that they NEED that “DIVER’S 200m” tag or else the watch is garbage

The SKX became great in its afterlife. The is really no other watch with the same parts availability from aftermarket manufacturers. Even if a case looks different, you often find specs for the bezel or the chapter ring matching an SKX version.

Once you change to a different watch type and/or a different movement, you will realize how limited you are.

Had several over the years.

They were good in their day, mostly because they were cheap!!

Massively overrated today tho, and actually think the 5kx is better....

I think if Seiko people were honest with themselves, they’d admit the 5KX is the more appropriate watch for them and a great outcome of the SKX’s reign (and Seiko’s poor handling). A dive style watch below the SKX’s MSRP, rated for water activities (in a way that was sustainable for Seiko), available in a very creative and wide-ranging collection, drilled lugs, better bracelets, and already coming with drilled lugs. And with no screw down crown it works for normal people quite well. If only the bezel were bidirectional

And Seiko don’t actually care about the “Diver’s 200m”, as evidenced by them willing to settle with the Kamasu or any dive watch that uses the lower standard of just being WR rated for 2 MPa (not each one being tested). Ironically, they will admit that it’s irrelevant to the vast majority of them, yet ironically again passionately and ignorantly argue like a knowitall that the 5KX “isn’t a real dive watch”, as if it matters or is the point.

They are a foundational pillar of the watch modding community, that is really my only interest in them. For that matter, the infamous SRPD/ 5 Sport was my first brand new mechanical watch, and I learned how to modify, and then how to break, repair and service watches with it, so it will forever be my favorite watch.
