Well, well, well. What do we have here then?

As a follow up on @Mr.Dee.Bater misguided attempt at demonizing the rightful trend to return to more sensible watch dimensions, I decided to start with a seemingly inoffensive and uncontroversial photo of my very retro 70's looking Accutron and my Zippo.

Image

What a nice looking couple! Ah, the 70's...a glorious time when men were men, smoking was the way to attract all the good chicks, and Uncle Sam wasn't shy of using a bit of Agent Orange to save us from the evil commies.

Except that it's a lie. The lighter isn't a Zippo but an oversized Zorro.

Image

And the watch isn't a buzzing vintage Accutron, but a more modern high frequency quartz Accutron II.

Image

Sure, it does look like a relic from the 70's, but remember this is Bulova we are talking about. The same guys who are responsible for humongous atrocities, like these ones that merit their own trial for crimes against humanity.

Image

My Accutron II has a lug to lug length of 51mm. That's already bordering on handcuff territory. So sure, we can have large size watches. But "can" must not equate to "must". Unless of course you want to be remembered as that guy.

Image

TBH, blowing up the Accutron had some interesting side effects, such as creating a huge domed crystal with which I can play and pretend that I know what I'm doing when I take photos.

Image

But do we really want to go through our life wearing the equivalent of a dining plate on our wrist? Yeah, I know that there are a lot of watch enthusiasts with larger wrists for whom the Bulova is sized just right, but most of us are not build to heroic proportions and don't want to have such as "wrist presence" that it's the only presence that is noticed when we enter a room.

Image

And yes, I'm really wearing my Bulova Accutron II today, because I feel like it. Everybody has the right to look ridiculous and today is my turn.

Watch sizes go with wrist sizes, too big or too small people will consider off or weird. But who cares? Only the wearer should care if it matters or not.

Ya, sort of...if the wearer has made a conscious decision to wear an oversized piece of steel on his wrist - such as the esteemed Catskinner today - but is fully aware of perhaps somewhat incongruous dimensions, then I have zero problems with oversized watches. Cheers for doing what you like!

On the other hand though, I regularly see insecure young professionals wearing ill-fitting blue suits with cognac coloured shoes and sometimes way too large watches which they probably think lend them 'cachet' / respectability / instant business success. In those cases, a just but fair style police does have a legitimate function imo :-)

I wonder whether the wrist presence/stay low key mentality is at all prevalent among enthusiasts. This site is dedicated to the opposite way of thinking and it seems many folks pine for comments from strangers about their watches. Your watch looks great on wrist btw. Too bad you feel ridiculous wearing it. The small watch push is a bit of herd mentality in my opinion.

Exactly. You can pull off the 32mm watch, with enough confidence, and the sheer understatement of this kinda case size is gonna play in your favour, because

  1. Watch is too small to actually get in sight of non-watch people

  2. Watch is properly sized to get attention from watch people

  3. If anyone tries to make fun of your "small" watch, just say that this is a Patek Calatrava, you got from your grandfather and tell a story about how great of a man he was. Funny guy gonna feel awkward, because now he made fun of a great person without a reason and also because he can't afford a Patek. Jokes on him.

Now imagine the other extreme. You walk in a room with a 45mm watch proudly hanging of your average wrist. Now the whole room can see what time it is, because it's acting as a wall clock. Congratulations, you got yourself an attention. And now everyone thinks you are some "male astrology" Andrew Tate enjoyer.

Jokes on you.

Bell bottom blue jeans, tight fitting dress shirts, clogs, university classes with hippie professors, lots of egregious memories but Bulova produced some of the most grotesque timepieces that I have ever encountered. I was happy collecting $35 vintage.

Can't the 36mm and 43mm watch wearers co-exist in peace? 🙏

Where would be the fun in this exactly?

·

I'm sold if they can put it on an Erika's.

Nice watch. Looks a bit like a UFO that landed on your wrist but as you said, Bulova loves their big watches.
