The problem with quartz

Once in a while you come to realize that there is a serious problem with the way that you perceive the world around you.

For example, I used to wear a titanium eco-drive before I became I a smartwatch fiend and when I ditched them one of the first thing I did was to look for a newer cheap quartz titanium, because I liked titanium and quartz watches were just a cheap commodity that happened to be able to tell the time.

So I bought a Seiko SGG731, which was the closest thing that I could find that looked like my old defunct eco-drive. End of story.

Well, not quite because I soon realized that the SGG was one of the best watches that I ever wore and it put to shame a lot of mechanical/automatic models that were supposed to be better, because they had a complicated mechanical movement inside with springs and gears instead of a "soulless" battery.

Today I'm wearing the SGG731 because the silicone strap of the CIGA I wore two days ago gave me a rash and wearing titanium will be the smart thing to do. The problem I facing now is that I may not take it off because it's the perfect everyday watch for the office.

Sadly, Seiko discontinued it a couple of years ago to replace it with the SUR375, which like many other replacements done lately by Seiko is worse and more expensive.

While I enjoy mechanical watches for what they are, the only problem I’ve ever had with quartz is that ticking seconds hand. I’m totally cool with a quartz watch without a seconds hand or possibly a GS as they seem to have made it not look so damn cheap. Otherwise, quartz is great.

Until you put it inside your drawer and you drive yourself crazy trying to find whatever bug that's buzzing your bed. 😛

It's an Accutron II, so no buzzing to worry about.

The problem with Quartz is a 10 cheap-o can beat a high end Swiss mechanical when it comes to accuracy. However, I don't think that's why people buy high-end watches, it's more about the marvel of engineering, the artistry, rarity, the love of collecting and hobby. As I am an affordable watch collector ( mostly Timex), I love the loud ticking of many of their models particularly the Weekender (which most people hate because they say it keeps them up). lol

In closing there is nothing wrong with Quartz

Do you have a current view on Citizen? I don’t have much experience with their watches but find the eco drive interesting and the pricing to be compelling. Thanks.

Unfortunately, I don't. The main issue I have with Citizen is that their styling is not very appealing to me. I could not find any model in their current range that looked like my old eco-drive, which is why I bought a the SGG731.

Citizen makes excellent watches, their divers are very competitively priced and their "The Citizen" watch is of very high quality. But they are not for me.

I love SolarQuartz. I agree that more fine watches should offer a Quartz option (like Grand Seiko, Cartier and Tag Heuer). I am debating whether to buy a Chronomaster, Astron or Tudor—or perhaps Formex Essence, for my next watch. I am leaning towards Quartz.

Ive got quartz timex twsteel seiko casio, kinetic ecodrive tough solar and they are all fine tough ànd very functional watches. Ive got mechanicals from various price ranges from seiko to iwc rolex omega cartier as well because i am a guy and i just love gears and pinionsand springs. It really depends on what interests you oŕ find useful or both
