New Squale Montauk

I’m absolutely floored at how good this new little diver is. I’ve been interested in Squale as a brand for quite some time, and recently came across the Subino and No Radiobino limited releases from 2 years ago, and those just stoked my desire for an old Squale (or better yet a Squale-cased Fifty Fathoms) even more. And then I found this. Tugs all of my heartstrings, and honestly I couldn’t ask for more, especially at the price. If I’m going to nitpick, the crown engagement on the crown tube threading feels rough and a little imprecise. But otherwise, a home run in my book. Anyone else have one of these yet? If so, any thoughts?

I really like it too 😉

Clear cut, honest design. I like the brand and this is one of the better  ones they released lately.

Congratulations. That's a fantastic looking watch. Love Squale overall

Thanks! The more I’m looking it all over the more I’m appreciating it, because the aesthetic and the feeling of quality is way more than I expected for the price. This is much better than my Yema Superman (which I loved but had a crown failure a little after 1 year and is waiting to go back to France). And the whole package is great. The rubber strap is one of the best I’ve tried (Yema’s was too stiff, and I’ve never had Uncle Seikos‘s or Zodiac’s that felt this supple right out of the box) and the matching logo buckle is a great touch.

Thanks! The crazy side of my brain is now saying “get all the colors!” But I’m sticking with this one. Just a classic look to my eye, and it fits great.

One final brief comment, I may have just gotten a really good one, but even though this has a Sellita SW-200 movement it’s running about +3 spd which is fantastic.

It’s so, so close for me. The ONLY thing I could ask for is a domed crystal. Other than that, the overall design is wonderful, the case size and shape are great, textured dial is super cool, Swiss movement for $600. If I didn’t already have a dive watch I’d likely get this one. Maybe once my current dive watch is beyond repair I’ll buy something very similar to this.

..but maybe it won’t exist by then! 😨 I thought I swore off new watches for a few years, but this might tempt me enough to break that.

I get what you mean as a domed crystal would look awesome with the overall aesthetic. But even though it’s a flat crystal it sits ever so slightly above the bezel, and on wrist just looks right (to me at least). And you’re spot on about what you get for 600$. Honestly besides the applied indices I don’t see or feel much difference in quality beteeen this and the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf I bought for 1500$ a year ago (Liberty London model). I got more straps and kit with that watch, and the Squale only comes on rubber, but it’s an awesome rubber strap (feels better to me than the Zodiac purple strap). And funny thing is, my Zodiac was/is so good it made me feel funny about my Black Bay (which I’ve since sold) because to me the Black Bay Steel didn’t feel like 2.5x the watch. After selling that I was looking at a BB58 (blue or 925) but this Squale has put thoughts of another Black Bay squarely out of my mind. Having owned both, I can’t say that the Black Bay is 6x the watch when compared to the Squale. So I’m super happy with this purchase and can’t wait to see how it holds up to some long term daily wear duties, and some beaches and boating related abuse (I live in Florida).

Hi!
I just received mine today and I’ve noticed the minute hand seems to be quite long. Am I being too nit picky or does it bother anyone else as well? Other than that I think it’s a beautiful piece.

Yes I see what you mean. The minute hand looks like it’s sized to point to minute marks as if they were on a chapter ring and not in the dial. But it hasn’t bothered me and I really didn’t notice.
