Hamilton Interstellar “Cooper” Review

sFinally arrived! My mini grail watch, Hamilton Interstellar “Cooper” H64615135 🔥

With my background in movie production and music, now I’m narrowing my collection and grail watches to the ones related to popular culture. Watches that are being worn in movies and pop culture icons. And I love science fiction movies. Beside the Seiko “Ripley” watch worn in the movie Aliens, this watch is another one that I’ve been wanting for quite some time. Christoper Nolan is one of my favorite director ever since Memento, up to the Dark Knight trilogy and of course, Interstellar. So maybe my love for this watch is a bit biased haha. There are actually two watches being used in the movie, the “Murph” one & the “Cooper” one. Although the “Murph” are the one more pivotal to the story and designed specifically for the movie, I’m more interested with this one. The Khaki Aviation Pilot automatic day date 42mm.

This watch is not specifically made for the movies, but somehow the design is well suited for it. Modern B type flieger style, in character with the Cooper character, in future time as a pilot using modern pilot watch. So what’s so good about this watch for me? First and foremost, the dial. I think this is one of the best dial made by Hamilton. The base of the dial is black with very subtle sunburst effect, with applied stainless steel indices. The texture of the indices is the highlight of this dial, with fine ridges textures that play with the light beautifully. It’s something you have to see it yourself to really appreciate it.

The hands are also  interesting with well thought design. A skeleton hands, with the hour hand has lume in the lower area, and the minute hand has lume in the upper area. Together, they balance each other really well. One might think this is a busy dial, but that’s the characteristic of a B type flieger watch. But on this watch, those “noisy” element actually balancing each other to create a more modern and refine pilot watch. I really like the day date layout and design. With the date at the 12 o'clock position and the date at the 6 o'clock position, and the curved design making it blending really well with the overall design.

It is a rather big watch, but not really. Although a pilot watch supposed to be big for visibility, but somehow the measurement of this watch made it very comfortable to wear. 42mm diameter, 48mm lug to lug, and only 11,5 mm thickness. And I love the 20mm lug size, balancing the overall dial and making it more comfortable to wear. A well thought out transition between the polished and brushed finishing make the case visually attractive.

The bracelet is also another highlight. Good solid three links bracelet with raised centre link, making it feel more luxurious and very comfortable to wear. The lume is ok, not to be compared with Seiko or Orient kinda lume. But that’s not what I’m looking for in this watch. And I got the new movement, the H-40 with an 80 hour power reserve. Haven’t tried it yet to know how’s the power reserve really perform, well update later about that. Since I got it a couple of days ago, this watch has been in wrist almost all the time hahaha.

Is this the best pilot watch? I don’t know. I bought it not because I wanted the best pilot watch. I bought this watch because it looks freakin beautiful, very well made as of Hamilton watches should be, feel comfortable on the wrist, and I love the connection with the popular culture. If those are the things that resonate with you, then I strongly recommend this watch. Some are selling this watch for $950, but I got mine for $680 brand new. I think with the watch I got, it’s a good value for the money.

Gives it a whole different vibe. But I always go back to the bracelet. The one gripe I did have was that I found the bracelet a little rattly. That was easily sorted though.

I really like what Hamilton did modernizing the B type, definitely very out of the box. Always wondered how the "big pilot" version of these wore btw.

Regardless, congrats on the watch!

Congrats! My Murph says "helloooo!"

Yes the 46mm! I suspect it's too large for most enthusiasts, but I always thought it'd be nice to see it vs. IWC's Big Pilot.

Really hi tech solution...little bit of cardboard underneath the clasp mechanism.

·

I'd put that on a shark mesh so fast......

Hasn’t seen that combination yet. So far the bracelet is really comfortable. Then again I‘ve only been wearing it for couple of days, so who knows…

The 46mm Pilot Day Date is surprisingly easy to wear even on a very small wrist.  The lugs are curved sharply down to hug the wrist and don’t feel like they overhang at all.

Here are photos of the 46mm on my wife’s tiny 5.5”wrist.  She wears this regularly.  On me, it looks big but it doesn’t feel big.

Nice review and congratulations on this watch. I have the quartz  version, not with that big day window but also nice and as a plus you get 20 bar water resistance rating. A nice grab and go piece which I frequently wear and get compliments on.

Thank you 🙏 nice looking watch, is it thinner than 12mm since it’s quartz? If it is, bet it feels nicer on the wrist.

·

officially it is 11mm, so not a lot of difference there, both rather thin and correct for the type of watch. What makes yours extra attractive is that big day window, sure you will enjoy it!

I am! Also enjoying the fast changing day. That is if I'm not already falling asleep during the changing time 😜

I did a bit of tape so it never moves out of place 🤣🤣

I really like how large watches look on women for some reason. I love it when my girlfriend wears my watches- she rarely does, but I think they look great.

@Buyingtime Great review -- it's a 5/5 for me as well.
