Which watch would you buy?

If all you knew about two watches was summarized below, which watch would you want for yourself?

WATCH 1

Case Size = 40mm

Thickness = 11.1mm

Lug Width = 21mm

Water Resist = 30m

BPH = 3.5hz

Power Reserve = 72H

Complications = Moonphase, Date

Brand = “A” Tier

WATCH 2

Case Size = 40mm

Thickness = 10mm

Lug Width = 22mm

Water Resist = 60m

BPH = 4hz

Power Reserve = 38H

Complications = Moonphase, Date, Heartbeat

Brand = “B-” Tier

EDIT: Very interesting feedback so far. I’ve intentionally isolated these specs and excluded things like brand, design, colors, and price. All of those aspects of the two watches are great for me, so I consider them a “wash”. But these facts are the crucial differences between the two watches. I’ll share what the two watches are after I’ve collected some data.

Need more information before I can make an informed decision

·

Neither. I buy on design/visuals

·

We need to see the dial.

The dial is the most important part of the watch. (In my opinion)

Moonphase is not a complication I’m interested in so neither for me.

·

Totally depends on the look and style

30m wr is a deal breaker for me, but given the complications listed, I don't think we are into the same kinds of watches.

Thanks for the feedback. I’m trying to decide between two dress watches. I want the community to decide for me because I can’t do it! 😂 😂

·

Neither - I wear 36-38mm.

·

Important metric for me is lug to lug…

·

As previously mentioned several times, the look is important. For me, a watch is not something that can be selected solely based on specs. The aesthetic is an equally important consideration.

Per my post on Sunday, the HUBBA HUBBA factor is Criteria One, so without that I can't really make an inf...

Heartbeat has no business being on a dress watch. Watch A

Interesting game! Such watches are outside my area of interest, but let's hop in... Watch 2 is odd. How can a mechanical watch measure heartbeat? Also, why the wide strap? Does it have a square case or what? It's so thin for something with three complications... If it weren't for them, I'd guess it had an ETA/Sellita so I would pick that.

But since it has them, I pick watch 1. It seems to be more elegant. None seem to be a watch I would wear daily.

Notes: "BPH" stands for "Beats per hour". "Hz" (upper case H, lower case z, because it's named after a person) means "hertz", or "cycles per second". They're both units of frequency, marked "f". In a watch, one cycle contains two beats. 1 Hz = 7200 BPH.

The correct way to write it is: "f = 3,5 Hz" or "Beat rate = 25 200 BPH".

Would not buy either only knowing that much information.

Thank you so much for the comment! The heartbeat complication isn’t really a complication at all, it just means there is a window on the dial that shows the mechanical movement behind the dial.

Also thank you the comments around frequency. I should have done better there, but I figured WC folks would know what I mean.

I do know what you meant, but watch enthusiasts and pedants share many traits (like attention to fundamentals and detail), so there's a big overlap. 😅

Pedant is the exact right word! 😂

Given the criteria I chose 1 for these reasons. The 1st 3 categories are either the same or close enough for me so not much of a factor. WR goes to watch 2 but it's a dress watch that I wouldn't be swimming with so doesn't matter much. BPH goes to watch #2 for sure again for me doesn't matter much. The PR is a big difference here and along with it being an A list brand verses a B list brand has me picking watch 1 for sure. The HR complication on watch 2 may have watch 2 looking better than watch 1 but without seeing it and just going off the information here watch 1 would be my winner. Very interested to see what the watches are though to see if I would switch what I picked. 😎

Big reveal:

Watch 1 = Longines Master Collection

Watch 2 = Frederique Constant Moonphase heartbeat

I’m leaning hard towards the Longines

I’m leaning hard towards the Longines

They both are great watches. I can see why you are having a difficult time deciding. Did you figure out what color? You might be able to save a bit by going through Amazon or Jomashop.

I want the white dial for sure. I really want a strap monster because I love swapping out straps! The drawback to the Longines is the 21mm lug width :/
