The Hypetrain was derailed

It’s still remarkable to me how people took the rumors of the discontinuation of the Rolex GMT II Pepsi seriously. The Pepsi is a cornerstone of Rolex’s offerings and has become not just iconic in their lineup, but it’s one of the most recognizable timepieces in history. People seriously thought they were going to discontinue this icon because they were having trouble with the color?!? Come on. This felt very much like a clickbait and groupthink story rather than based in any sort of reality. I would venture to guess that Rolex would first opt to produce a bezel in a different material if it were really a production problem rather than discontinue this legend. They would find a material that held color better. I would be willing to bet good money that the Pepsi is here to stay and will continue to evolve for years to come.

It's a superlative chronometer. But seriously, the pepsi draws my eye more than anything else.

I'd be willing to make that bet as well. Here to stay, for sure.

I found it very hard to believe the Pepsi would be discontinued. A rumor was started and it snowballed… pushed by gray market dealers to cash in.

I was curious to see the amount of Pepsi’s on Chrono the day of W&W compared to today. I think we’ll start seeing some offloading and more in the market. Question is… Will the prices start dropping?

Yeah, it was like “rumors are saying the Pepsi is going to be discontinued …” Well, which rumors? Where’d they start? I never actually heard a reasonable answer to that.

My conjecture: it was started by grey dealers and then pushed by YouTubers for views. This stuff is always good for clicks.

Market manipulation. Vanity and ego are easy to influence

They did discontinue the Pepsi once, when they switched to ceramic. So the concerns were in place. Discontinuation doesn't necessarily mean it would be gone forever, but, like the Nautilus, come back in a different form.

And it will probably happen at some point, when they find something new to put on/in it.

Agreed. I never got a second thought it was going away or something they have been doing for years all of a sudden is a problem. Some watch site, can't remember which 1 probably has it correct. Some of the production shifted to the new gray/black GMT. They can only produce so many watches and if dealers were truly seeing less of them it was due to a production shift and continued rabid interest.

·

Even if they discontinued it, it will come back after a hiatus of 1 or 2 years. It's too much if an icon to be discontinued in long term.

They don’t have to discontinue they can just lower volume output. Win win for Rolex keeps the hype up and they don’t hurt feelings by discontinuing an icon
