Pre-owned watch checklist

What are the things to look for when you are buying a pre-owned watch?

I am thinking of buying this one.

Something like this nice Tissot, I am not as worried about knock offs, so for me it would all come down to buying experience. Couple items:

  • Where are you buying from? eBay, forums, etc? With sites like eBay, Chrono, and some grey dealers, you have protection. Unless I know the person, I do not simply pay cash and move on. At a minimum, PayPal goods and services with my Amex for added protection.

  • Which goes into the point most will say, cliche as it is, buy the seller. What are their ratings? Where did they get the watch? Why are they selling it? Does it have box and papers? Any whiff of impropriety, walk.

  • What is the price relative to recent sales? Use eBay search function to look up recent sales. Watch charts and chrono also have sales figures, but I tend to trust eBay because the figures represent most sales, shy of best offers, which indicates the price accepted was below the sale price.

  • Condition, obviously look for good pictures, scratches, etc. Most people will not have a timegrapher, but on a watch of this price, I would not worry so much about that. How is the leather? More likely that not, it will either be well worn, or never worn. Either way, anticipate replacing it.

Hope that helps!
