For What I Search in a Wristwatch

I wear watches for decades. In the years around 2018 I tried to switch into a fully digital lifestyle and evaluated my progress and findings. I guess that made me jotting down criteria and thoughts about dump wrist watches.

I found a forgotten outline about what I search for in a watch in my second volume of my 2018 bullet journal. Although I haven't had this outline present, it is still a silent guideline. I, however, prefer solar watches today.

Here is a translation of my double page in my bullet journal from November 2018:

* A watch helps me keep track of time.

* A phone distracts me: I never just glance at the time.

* A watch is distraction-free.

* I don't want to be tied to batteries.

* I don't want to have to remember to wind the watch.

* I would like to have a date on the watch to be able to quickly and easily check the date without distraction.

* A watch is a fashion statement.

* It should be water resistant just in case.

* I would like a solar-powered or automatic watch.

* Automatic watches have more style and are at least theoretically more durable.

* Solar-powered watches have a longer power reserve and are built thinner. They are more accurate and can be radio-controlled watches.

* Citizen has a wide selection of beautiful Eco-Drive watches.

I think I would have to agree with most of your journal. I am drifting more towards solar and Eco-Drive (I might post a NEW watch later this week if it arrives). I am not against a mechanical, I have 4, but the servicing does add up over time. For me and not set in stone, I want a watch that looks good is well made, keeps accurate time and date and looks after itself mostly. Nice handwriting but wouldn't expect less from a pen enthusiast, geen ink huh must be royalty !

Fascinating list! Apparently you’ve found the perfect answer with solar watches. I have yet to find one that pleases me enough to buy, but time will tell.

By the way your English is very good! 👍

Have a look at the Casio Oceanus range, I did a review on one.

Ok, will do. Thanks!

Nice handwriting. Would your other hobby be fountain pens?

Not only my other but my first hobby.

I second the Casio Oceanus and own the T200 myself. The sizing of the Oceanus series should sit well on your 20cm wrist. Their basic 3 hander, the T200, which has muiltband 6 and Bluetooth, with very good finishing that won’t break the bank at about US$350 new.

I did think about getting The Citizen. I was looking at the AQ4091 (titanium) or the slightly smaller AQ4100 (titanium)or AQ4020 (steel). They are great looking, eco drive, high accuracy quartz movements (+/- 5s a year), very classy and well finished sports watches, positioned as the Grand Seiko equivalent of the Citizen brand. However, those are in the US$3k+ range. That swayed my decision. 😆

Curious enough I started collecting fountain pens before watches.

I looked at the Citizen AQ slso, they are drop dead georgous, but the price! I wish Casio would expand the Oceanus range and sell worldwide. but maybe not as it makes it fairly rare in the UK anyway. A Seiko Astron also might suit @Balanced .

Interesting. Maybe I misunderstood when you wrote “switch into a fully digital lifestyle.” It sounds (and looks like it by your BuJo) that you’ve gone more analog.

·

Solar watches make great dailies in a small collection. However, I have two solars in a collection of over 40 watches which means that I am regularly having to remember to take them out to soak up some rays at the weekend. Its not always the grab and go convenience it seems.

You have great penmanship.

It is more the outcome of my digital approach. My BuJos restart in April 2017 after a time of all digital management approach and tools. I ran into a lot of troubles and gave up trying to solve them, because I found myself losing focus on the tasks. My fastest way to completely forget about a project and its reference materials was to throw it into digital project management tools and storages.

Today I'm working in a balanced mix of digital and analogue tools, because fully analogue doesn't work for me either.

I don't put mine into the dark. They are stored in a way that they always get enough light to keep running.

What pen and ink are you using? ☺️

·

Solar powered are more durable due to the simpler nature of quartz movements, especially if you are going to be slightly rough with your watches

True. After some research I went the solar way.

Here it is Graf von Faber-Castell Mossgreen. The fountain pen is more difficult, but I think it was either Lamy Dialog 3, Lamy 2000 or Lamy cp1 14 kt.

·

Very elegant handwriting though, I guess it is a sign of proper German schooling. I wish we had more focus on that back when I was in school. I do appreciate a good fountain pen however, without the proper training, the result is nowhere near yours.

I have mine moved to a glass topped box quarantine, but I should move that box to a window ledge.....

Amazing! I also have a Lamy 2000, but seldom use it.
