Books to "watch for"

Hi guys, I am planning on buying books related to watches. The list below is what I plan on buying first. Let me know if you have read them, or I should stay away from. If you have other suggestions, please share. Caveat... I don't like books about specific brands.

I've got A man & his Watch. It's ok, not fantastic tbh, more people driven than about the technical details, so depends if you want watch stories or something more detailed.

I voted the Daniels book, but not got it (yet) but that's because I'm more interested in the mechanics of watches rather than stories about their owners. (Best book by far is the Omega museum magazine thingy, but you aren't interested in single brand stuff and it's hard to get)

Hope that helps!

I would highly recommend "The Wristwatch Handbook" by Ryan Schmidt. It's very inexpensive for a decent watch book (available for $100 CAD or less on Amazon), and provides a wealth of information as well as some great photos.

I also have the Daniels book, and would not recommend it unless you want technical minutia. It's possibly a must have for anyone wanting to get into watchmaking, but a bit too technical for someone simply looking for a basic understanding of watches.

Thank you, I will keep that in mind.

I've read A Man and his Watch and really enjoyed it. Also, my daughter bought me Horology by Barry Kaplan. Finally, a nice book about watch companies is The Watch, Thoroughly Revised by Stone and Pulvirent.

Add Hands of Time by Rebecca Struthers

I like what you did with the title 🤩

I would add to this list “build the ultimate watch collection” by Jason Heaton. I’ve read it and it’s a decent read.

Will do, thanks

Dava Sobel's "Longitude" is a must.

50 Watches that Changed the World is another good one

Would re-iterate ‘Longitude’ on the genius of Harrison and his sea clocks.

he kept getting screwed over and not given the prize for solving longitude by the awarding body who preferred the astronomical mathematical method

great book

Amazing choices all. I think I have every book in my library. I would also add the recently published Horology by Barry Kaplan. Outstanding overview of watches and the industry and a very cool philosophical and scientific treatment at the beginning.
