Micro Tournament Round 1 Day 1: Ming Vs. De Rijke

Rules: • Voting is based on the overall brand, not the individual model or sample photo. • There are no rules on how you should choose, but you are welcome to civilly debate quality, value, heritage, etc. • Voters are encouraged to look at the hashtags for threads on individual brands or visit their sites. • Poll closes apx 11PM ET 3/14. • Be respectful of all the brands and members, even if the vote does not go your way. This is meant to be lighthearted fun to raise awareness of 64 microbrands. • Ties will go to the brand with the most unique user-owned photos of their watch on this thread. Good luck and have fun! All posts and results will be tracked here and under #microtournament

As a Dutch neighbor I wanted to go for De Rijke (which I did not know prior to this). Very nice watches and overall craftsmanship. That said, Ming’s impact is clearly more prevalent at this stage…this is going to be fun :)

I went for the underdog personally. Both brands offer a unique aesthetic which one has to appreciate. Truly no loser in this match up.

Absolutely right, sad to see such a cool brand leave on round 1 (well the day is far from finish so who knows) but that’s part of the game. The main thing is that thanks to you I have discovered a new cool brand :)

This is a great way to get familiar with new brands and look at some watches. At least for me. Never heard of these, but looked up their offerings and seen some interesting stuff.

I was also tempted to go for the underdog but pushed the button for Ming. This great brand is on my list. I’m glad to learn about the Dutch one though, maybe something to get when I’m reading a grandchild “Goodnight Moon”.

Good morning!

I have one general question about the rules @AllTheWatches:

• Ties will go to the brand with the most unique user-owned photos of their watch on this thread.

I am not a native speaker, so what does this mean exactly? Will the brand with the most votes or the most photos be the winner of each round?

Thanks in advance

Morning Bjoern! If we have a poll that is even split, say 100 votes each, I will then look at the comments for most photos to break the tie. It is unlikely to happen, but I like the idea of folks sharing photos of these brands during the discussion.

Thank you!

That totally makes sense. Thanks for alle the work you put in this tournament!

A little gem I read on De Rijke's site describing their Amalfi Series 1S:

With the watch worn under an angle of 90 degrees and a long strap it could even be worn on the leg.

As stated in the latest Bite I don’t have much experience of micro brands but I will exercise my right to vote.

Seems like very different price categories and availability. Looking at Ming -> there’s only limited edition (100 watches) prices at ~30,000 USD. De Rijke is more affordable and I guess I like their designs more. Though Ming looks fantastic, too

Hey Vlad, Ming has watches at a few price points, but most tend to fall in the $2-$5K range and are released in timed or limited batches.

This will be interesting. I'll be learning about brands I've never heard of, like De Rijke (no clue how that's pronounced). Nice looking pieces but I'd kill for a Ming. Never will own one, well out of my range. I'll probably never see either in the flesh.

Poll closed for this matchup. Congratulations to Ming.
