A 9 jewel Grade 4 Zhongshan watch from Nanjing Watch Factory. These watches are sort of a collector's cult favourite in China because Zhonghshans have a wide range of pressed dial decoration, and a variety of detailed case backs.

That is the absolutely perfect strap for that watch. I will assume that you chose it.

You ain't kidding about that strap. What a beautiful set-up!
I don't really know much about the Sino-watchmaking industry, beyond the success of the Seagull and Sugess brands, that are both enjoying quite a bit of success here in the west.
I assume Zongshan has mostly been selling into the China domestic market until recently. Obviously the Chinese watchmaking industry has tremendous growth potential in the coming years. I see a similarity to the growth of the specialized manufacturing export industries in postwar Japan.

The Zhongshan is most likely from the 1990s, so far as I can tell.
I'm very interested in the photo. That's very cool! Have you been back since then?

The Zhongshan looks quite contemporary, a la Grand Seiko.
I was only in China in '81 and '82. We were travelling through on our way to Gongga Shan for a mountaineering expedition. I happened to pop my head into this shop and saw a half dozen workstations, each with a little pool of light, with workers all working on wristwatches. Wish I had investigated more.
Outstanding!

I somehow missed this comment before now, foggy, thank you! All credit to CNS watch straps because I think this series of straps were very different than the run of the mill, with inspired color combos.
