Jaeger LeCoultre Discussion

Mke at "This Watch, That Watch" has a really interesting episode on JLC today.

For me it is still an aspirational brand as I'm more a Tudor Omega, and my trusty Explorer kind of guy, but this raises questions about the brand positioning and direction.

What are some of your thoughts on JLC and maybe show some of the ones in your collection?

Do you love the Polaris? Reverso guy? Master Control?

Personally my grail at the moment is the new Polaris Chronograph.

I’m a huge JLC fan, have a couple of their watches. Too cheap? I wouldn’t say a $10k watch is cheap by any means.

Yes “too cheap” is a bit of a clickbait title, but he digs into the subject in great detail and does back up that “claim” with some interesting ideas

Oh yeah for sure...I wasn't offering this up as the gospel, just as a point of discussion as he has interesting points to make. At least I thought they were interesting.

2 years ago they where way underpriced. After 2 years of jacking up their prices I’m not sure they are undervalued. I think the pre loved market will be the judge. A favourite brand of mine but I’m glad I managed to get mine before the price raises or with great offers (indicating soft 2nd hand market).

Yeah I’ve been having similar feelings, but on the other side. I wish I had gone ahead with one before the massive price hikes. But I would have gone pre-owned anyway. Fantastic trio you have 👊🏻

Thank you! The pre loved route is the way ahead imo. I picked my favourites from the different lines of the brand.

JLC, has such a history and heritage in watch world, I think such a brand should have the aesthetics class of a A Lange & Söhne, Moritz Grossmann some PP, but , .no,

for instance the choise of hands on so many modeis are hard to understand , and others issues too.

I'm a Jaeger-LeCoultre fan. I probably won't necessarily say their watches are "too cheap" as described in the video considering their recent price increases, but I do somewhat agree that they are "underperforming" as compared to other brands, as I think most of their watches are better made than some of the more hyped up watches by other brands on the market. One of the reasons that I can think of is their marketing campaign; I think a more careful choice of brand ambassadors would help improve the brand image. i.e. I appreciate Jackson Yee is a famous artist in China but at this stage I don't see what attributes he holds that represent and could help promote the brand (e.g. heritage) well enough. Conversely, what is it that make Jaeger-LeCoultre believe Jackson is a suitable ambassador to be on their cover.

To give an example, for me, I think the best brand ambassador I have seen so far is Rolex and Roger Federer, and I think it's a hard one to beat.
