Tokyo Memories and the Railmaster

I bought this watch in Tokyo, wandering around and checking out its many watch shops with my wife. Every watch I own has a significant memory associated with it. So when I put on a watch I am transported to that time and place where it was acquired. Omakase sushi, Ginza, Shibuya and Tokyo Disneyland with my wife is where and when I am instantly transported to in my mind when I wear it. I bought the Railmaster on a Nato strap which was my only option as it was the last one at the AD, but in my opinion a Nato never suited this watch. So I immediately switched it out for a black textile rubber strap which changed its look and feel and makes it more like a pilot/field watch. Love it. By the way, I recommend checking out the Ginza Omega Flagship store in Tokyo with the glass tube elevators, it’s an experience in itself! What watch do you wear that has the most memories associated with it?

This is a watch that means a lot to me. It's not tied to a specific memory or occasion in my life. It's special because I picked it up at auction for a couple of hundred pounds in a really beat up state. The case was totally scratched, as was the caseback & the crystal. I set about trying to restore it to a condition that would see anyone willing to wear it.

I removed all of the scratches & managed to replace the crystal off the back of watching a few instructional YouTube videos. The condition it's in now is something I'm really happy with, & if I'm honest, a condition I never thought I'd be able to achieve. The project I set myself has & will continue to give me great satisfaction with the result.

Love my Railmaster! Best strap monster, and can be a chameleon able to change as fast as you can swap a quick change strap.

Thank you. Unfortunately the downside of the project is that my wife pinched it from me & I don't get to wear it very often 😀

Damn, it looks like I need to up my strap game too after seeing what you can pair with a Railmaster. Nice! At this point I am also seriously considering a Forstner bracelet as an option too, I heard good things.

The Railmaster can take on so many looks, almost a one watch collection with quick change straps. It’s nice, at 20mm, so I use those straps across several watches in my collection. I like Barton for canvas, nice, inexpensive, and quick change. For the custom leathers, I like Delugs. I prefer ordering bespoke, and that’s why I have the threads matching the lume spots on some. It’s more expensive, but again at 20mm I can switch them across the collection.

Similar to your Japan experience, but mine involved my Seiko diver (SBEN003). Picked it up on release date this past August at the Ginza boutique. A great experience and great memories—not to mention a fantastic first visit to Japan, we’ll go back for sure, simply a fantastic country to experience.

Looks like I need to brush up on my Japanese because I think another watch buying adventure in Tokyo might be in order. Nice shot in front of the Wako building! Did you get a chance to visit the Seiko Museum?

The Railmaster is one of my faves. I actually like the original denim and leather nato strap, but it's bulky. Definitely had to switch it out.

I know what you mean about Nato straps being bulky. I definitely prefer more svelte straps myself, but it seems like I’m turning into more of a strap collector than a watch collector!

For me it’s my Speedy. A long time ago I felt fortunate and flattered to be headhunted to work abroad temporarily. I rewarded myself with a Speedy. As it was going to be my first mechanical, I heavily researched what I wanted and could afford.

·

Nearly same experience with my speedy! Got it pre-owned in a store in Shinjuku in 2019, I can't be rid of it because it reminds me of my first big trip with my wife while we were dating

I search around Tokyo and Yokohama for an Astron when it first came out. When I found a shop in Shibuya, it was way too chunky at the time. I felt let down because i was fascinated with a watch that set its own time via signal. But then I found this blue faced Seiko Brightz in a shop in Yokohama station. It didnt disappoint. It was my daily until the newer, thinner, Astron came out. This was also bought in Yokohama. The Astron became my daily. Even brought it on deployment with me. I always think about walk the streets in Yokohama, Shibuya and Yokosuka when wearing these momentos.

IWC textile rubber strap that I originally bought for my IWC but looks so much better on my Omega.

·

Wow, love the retro vibes on that watch! Definitely make time for the Seiko Museum, it’s awesome and free admission.

Yep, we stayed just down the street and I actually popped into the museum 3 times! Here’s a few more photos-“Seiko row” as well as that glass elevator at Omega shop others have mentioned..
