What’s the perfect amount of watches for your collection?

So I’ve been collecting watches for a year now. I’m up to 8 watches total and I have every intention to keep buying more. But something happened. I desided to slow down so I can keep collecting.

Now, don’t get me wrong I’m not done. I have a 6 or 8 watches I want to buy now and I’m sure that number will grow as time goes on. But, I’m starting to think how many do I really want or need. How many can I actually wear and be happy doing so? I don’t want have watches I don’t wear. So what is my magic number? 10, 15, 20. I know this is subjective but today I’m thinking 12-14 is where I’d like to be and stay. That’s why I want to slow down. I’m almost to that number. I could be full of shit and end up with 30.

I also know that many of you Crunchers have boxes full of watches and are perfectly happy. I honestly don’t know if I have the bandwidth or the energy for that many watches in my collection.

So help me out tell me how many watches are in you collection? How many would you like in you collection? And how do you manage the 2 numbers if they’re different?

Have 21 in the collection, would like to have 12 and could sacrifice some to get some to that point. Already gave one away to my daughter, more will probably go her way and when my youngest is ready, they’ll both inherit what they want.

I don’t know if that’s sacrificing your watches or just spreading them around.

I have a long way to go to catch up to you. 🫣

I currently have 3 in the collection, I would like 6 at which point I plan to operate a 1 in 1 out basis. The fact that I have sentiment attached to each watch I buy helps reduce the chances of an impulse buy.

That’s some self control. I thought the same thing too. But then I found out I can make any purchase sentimental.

I currently have 12, but don’t know if that’s the right number. Each (except one) gets a fair amount of wrist time. Currently looking at my next pickup which will probably be in September.

What ive learned is I need something I can wear daily, and for all seasons and occasions- not an easy task.

I have 14 watches total, but 12 I consider to be “in my collection” and 2 I need to sale off but haven’t yet. They aren’t worth much and I don’t need the money.

I started off wanting to experience as many brands and styles as possible. As that experience has grown, I’m refining my taste. I have two sub collections; one of G-Shocks and one of Seikos, three in each. The remaining 6 are Swiss. I do wear all my watches, but mostly the Swiss.

I plan on keeping my Seikos and G-Shocks, but I might trade one in and one out to keep the size right. I plan on keeping my Swiss pieces between 6 and 12 total, and I plan on only buying one watch a year to maximize the quality of the pieces. This year I bought a Speedmaster. I’m currently planning on a Cartier next year.

There are more than six additional pieces I want to own, so at some point I will start trading out older/lesser watches for watches that better suit my taste and will attempt to maximize wrist time.

Haha very true you can make any purchase sentimental. Perhaps money no object I would have as many watches as I wanted but for me there would be no fun in the hobby without setting myself guidelines to play by. E.g. Wanting at least one Swiss, Japanese and German watch in the collection at all times.

In rotation? 3.

Overall? 8-12 seems reasonable.

I’ve got 30+ 🤣

The formula is incomplete. The correct formula has a critical requirement

F=X+1 < s-1

Where s=number of whatches that will definitely infuriate your spouse

I always knew I was bad at math. Brilliant formula. 😆
