Has anyone been gifted a watch for an achievement?
I was going through some boxes and cabinets looking for my fathers watch but I came across this gold watch instead. I don’t remember getting it or ever wearing it. But I instantly knew what it was and where it came from.
It was given to me by the Carpenters Union as a graduation gift for becoming a journeyman back in the very early nineties. Obviously, I never wore it or I would have some memories with it. A gold watch would’ve been the absolutely last thing I’d ever wear as a carpenter at 22. I had a G-Shock on my wrist 24/7 back then.
Anyways, it brought back memories of a time where I thought I could do wherever I wanted. For me that meant work and travel. I was pretty good at too. I have good memories of all the place I surfed. But work has alway come first for me and 5 years later I started my own business.
So, in a way that watch has brought me to where I’m at today. I’m still building only now from an office. I may no longer swinging a hammer but I’m still a carpenter at heart.
That watch I’d forgotten about has meaning to me. Do any of you Crunchers have a watch that was gifted to you for a Graduation, a retirement, a wedding or a mile stone? If so. Show me and tell me for what.

Yes. My dad was just getting into mechanical watches and gifted me a Vincero Reserve when I graduated from law school last year. No matter what my collection looks like down the road, I’ll never get rid of this one.

I was preparing to enter middle school, still struggling with the English language( slow learner) the summer before enrolling at a new school my immigrant dad gifted identical 1960s Omega Seamaster watches to my older brother and me, bought an entry level Rolex OP for himself, there was little difference in price. My brother more worldly by 18 months quietly admitted that he might prefer the more robust Rolex. Our dad took no offence said that one day we could buy whatever we wanted but his Rolex was a tool watch, he hoped that we might not have to earn our living with a strong back, use our brains occasionally. He wore that modest Rolex fixing the boiler in our hovel and attended graduations and weddings of his two underperforming sons. I will never deserve a better watch than the 1960s Omega that I wore until I did not.

I've never been gifted a watch for an achievement. I have gifted many watches over the years. I gifted a 36m Explorer I to my office manager for 10 years of outstanding service.

You worked construction as a rough in carpenter? I spent so many great moments chatting with strong Italian men who arrived to make a better life for their families here in Canada. I have one friend son of a man who started a small renovation company has a massive Panerai watch collection

But I've gifted a Seiko diver automatic to my father-in-law, he love it and use it for diving.
And a semi-vintage Citizen automatic to my brother, I couldn't stand seeing him wearing a Daniel Wellington.
