Watches and Food !

Food and watches even.

As per usual sorry if this has been covered before. I have seen lots of articles about watches and cars, watches and clothes etc., but I thought I might try and pair up a few classic meals with an appropriate watch. Would I ever do this in real life, not a chance, but it got me thinking.

This is primarily based on UK food, because its what I know best, so apologies to the other cuisines of the world, that I also love, as my waistline will testify to.

Breakfast.

It has to be the Great British breakfast, sometimes called the Full Monty or Full English. This works best in the winter months and will usually consist of bacon, eggs, sausages black pudding, tomatoes and baked beans & mushrooms, in fact the list is almost endless ! It must also be said that my Welsh, Scottish & Northern Irish cousins also do close variations that are equally delicious, if not better. I love coffee but a proper brekkie must be washed down with a huge mug of British breakfast tea. A note to the WC community from other parts of the world. If visiting the UK and you see a lot of workmen vans outside what looks like a café, then immediately stop and go in. A friendly welcome is almost guaranteed as well as some choice language and a belter of a breakfast. Those workies know every good breakfast around are like homing pigeons. I have used this method all over the UK, it never fails !

And what watch will go with this hearty start to the day. It has to be the Casio F91. The workies might have G Shock on, but this humble watch suits the food better. Its plain, honest, wholesome and great value, just like a Full English.

Lunch

A difficult one this one. Most of us its a sandwich and crisps. But this is my fantasy menu and watch pairing, and when travelling or on holiday I will stop at a pub, and if its a good pub they will do a fantastic Ploughman Lunch. A great one will have crusty bread with salty butter, with slices of proper ham. Cheese will definitely make an appearance and will usually be Cheddar. Then we get to the other bits and bobs that are great. A home made pork pie and the wonderful scotch egg. This is a hard-boiled egg wrapped in sausage meat and coated in breadcrumbs and deep fried! Pickled onions, Branston pickle a must also, and again like the breakfast other things might show up on your plate, usually a bit of a salad. This is usually washed down with a pint or two (or 3) of a great British Ale of your choice. As I said if its a good pub they will have a huge choice of cask ales. I love pubs and bars around the world, but a British one has a unique atmosphere. There will usually be an old boy sitting in the corner nursing a pint he will take a hour or so to drink while reading the paper.

And the watch, for me has to be a field watch. There are lots of great ones out there and if its a posh pub then a Hamilton Khaki might be a good choice, but for me its a Seiko 5 field watch and the cheapest one you can find. It goes well with the food as its a simple and classic design and with that outdoors vibe, as if the weathers nice, you might be sitting in the pub garden. There is something honest about it, like the food.

Dinner

Also known in my parts as tea (what's for tea mum?) But on a Sunday its is usually called Sunday Diner or even Sunday lunch. On any given Sunday in the UK most families will have a Sunday roast. This might be beef, chicken, pork or lamb. If you go to a pub for this you might get all four or even five as Turkey might be on the menu (we only eat turkey on Xmas day) Then with the meat my favourites things in life… roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. Gravy of course and lots of it. This will be made in the traditional method of the roasting meat juices, flour and vegetable water that you have boiled the veg in (for at least half an hour) and whatever veg you fancy, peas, carrots, cabbage, you name it. Even the wonderful cauliflower cheese that is divisive at least in my family (I love it) If Jersey Royal potatoes are in season then this meal goes up to a level that is hard to accurately mark. To my non UK friends garlic will be totally banished from this meal. This meal is better at home but if you go to a pub or what we call a carvery, then gluttons like myself go mad as you can pile on your plate as much as you like, at least with the veg. I have been known to stop the whole pub, who all turn and look in astonishment, on may way back from the carvery counter.

And the watch to go with this wonderful meal. Well its comfort food for me so the watch has to match that and for me its a comfy and plain relaxing type of watch, and its the wonderful Casio EFV 110. Its plain, wears great, accurate and dependable. Its above its station in life and just wears in a relaxing way.

I would love to know what you all think of my choices. I realise this is a UK centric post in regards to the food so apologies for that. I would love to know what the perfect burger watch is?, the amazing currywurst my German friends enjoy (I LOVE currywurst) or what goes with the wonderful French food that draws me over to many a bistro over the years. As you can see dive watches have not made the list, but if I was eating fish tacos in Mexico one might make an appearance.

Thanks for getting this far !

Haha interesting idea. I'm in Texas so choices would be:

Breakfast - Biscuits and Gravy paired with Casio Royale

Lunch - Bowl of Seafood Gumbo with Citizen Garrison

Dinner - Crawfish and Shiner Bock with a GShock (just in case the night goes sideways)

Ya never know what going to happen with a belly full of crawfish and Shiner Bock. Fan boat bow fishing, night goggle hog hunting, wrenching on a buddy's vintage square body F-100, or some yahoo hopped up on too much Mt. Dew (Talladega Nights reference lol)

Impossible to talk watches, after seeing those delicious food photos 🤙😋❤️

Loved seeing the blue Casio EFV110 as the dinner watch. I used to have the exact same watch. I bought it for $37, eventually gave it to my brother because I also have the blue watch's brother, the black EFV100.

Sometimes it's said that we collectors eat, sleep, and breathe watches. WARNING Do not eat the watch you chose to accompany your meal. Eat only the food.

I really like this watch, its so good value for money and dressy without being over dressy if you get my drift. I am thinking of buying another for when my one breaks which is unlikely with a Casio ! I got the black one but love the blue and lighter dial one !
