How much is too much?

I'm so glad I got my hands on this one before prices started skyrocketing.

I think the Seiko SKX is an absolute classic, and therefore a "must have" if there is such a thing.

Assuming that you agree that every collection needs one, and knowing that it has been discontinued, how much would you be willing to pay for it? Where do you draw the line?

Obviously this depends heavily on the state it is in, but what's your ballpark figure? How much is just right, and how much is too much?

Don't get me wrong, and don't get your hopes up as I am not selling...

I mean, I've had a couple of offers from people who were willing to pay almost double for it, but I kindly refused.

A ok watch in it's day, but only because it was cheap for the spec's. I've had 3, years ago, & wouldn't want one now , it really wasn't great even in it's heyday.

Realistically they're worth whatever folks are prepared to pay.

I can piece an SKX together for around $150 to $200, which I would include an NH36. I have bought a modded vintage SKX007 from eBay for $88, if I remember right, but the 7S26 inside it was damaged in shipping. Rather than return it, I swapped the movement for an NH36, and bought a couple bracelets from Long Island Watch Company. I would say that, for me, I might consider paying up to $250 for a vintage piece with a working 7S26. A lot of them sell for much more, but since I can build them, I just won't pay that premium.

I really don’t think these will ever get too expensive. They made too many of them.

I think even if you love love the Skx and can’t live without one, its your favorite watch, it’s only worth paying up to $500, maybe $750. Thas the absolute long term theoretical max I would say though…and right now probably not worth paying more than $200 for a used one.

That to me would no longer be an SKX...

That's your prerogative. 😎👍

But thanks for answering my question. I think I agree with your ceiling of $250 👍

Yeah, I see your point. I was really shocked to get those bids...

I would think it depends on why you consider it valuable - or not.

Objectively, as a watch, the Orient Kamasu is superior to an SKX in almost every way and for much less money, for example. If you're buying an SKX as purely a timepiece.

I recently picked up an SKX again after not having one for ages. All original and at an amazing deal at less than what an SKX build would be. And finding one in original condition was an important factor. This was an emotional purchase.

The SKX was my first mechanical watch and I love this watch for more than its ability to tell time. It's a watch I regretted selling and am very happy to have back to connect to those memories.

For me, it's worth more than the sum of its parts.

Wow, $500 is a lot of money for an SKX...let alone $750! Of course value depends on what people are willing to pay for it. But although I really love my SKX, it was my first automatic - and it started off my collection - I really can't imagine paying more than $250 for one in mint-condition...

I'm completely with you! I bought mine, like you as my first mechanical watch, for around $230. I absolutely love it and wouldn't part with it for no amount of money because of the emotional value. However if I imagine not having it, I would never offer to pay someone more than $500 for it. There are plenty other watches out there that I'd rather buy instead I think...

·

I snagged mine at $225 which was a lot to me at the time and as much as I love the watch anyone wanting to pay more than $500 is crazy.

Couldn't agree more! Got mine at a similar price and love it a lot. But for the life of me I can't imagine paying double, let alone more...

·

I love the SKX but it is more an emotional attachment than a technical appreciation.

·

The $300 ballpark is where I personally would draw the line.

I picked mine up in excellent condition for $150 in 2021. You can find good deals, it just takes patience and being involved in real conversations with real people. You'd be surprised at how many people have a good condition watch they're open to selling when given the opportunity.

The easy way (i.e. buying directly from a store online) is always going to charge a premium.

I know the SKX has a lot of fans but there are shops here in Toronto that carry Seiko watches that are superior from the same brand sitting in dusty cases waiting for a customer. I used to pick up SKX watches from a discount watch wholesaler who offered the watches for almost whatever the customer would pay as long as you would buy more than 3 at a time no proper papers or boxes, my frugal real estate broker friend has a pile that he bought from me years ago, gives away to guys who does odd jobs for him.

·

I’ve had two SKX and sold them both. I’d not buy another as there are much better dive watches than the SKX in the £2-400 bracket.

Sure, the movement is outdated...but I think it's worth keeping it original. Like you said for emotional reasons...

$150 is an absolute steal, congrats 👏🏽

Personally, I wouldn't pay more than $200 for a SKX. It's a cool watch, for sure, but it's a basic watch with a very basic movement.

That's absolutely true. The movement is definitely outdated...

I agree.I really like mine, bought for $110,way before current elevated price.I todays world,I’d buy a deep blue version of these, many bezel colors and straps.$100 during holidays. It’s a really nice version of 007&009’s.

$110 is amazing. I guess I was a little late to the party as the watch had already been discontinued, I bought it in 2020...

Have you tried to hire a guy who does small repairs lately, lol? They are the new rich!!

·

I love my 007. Got a really good deal on it too.

I got the 009 since the color of the bezel stood out more to me...

·
Commisar

Too much to buy a real one so Namoikimods and eBay helped me piece together one. Seiko dial, hands, chapter ring, bezel insert and bezel plus a NH36 movement. All else is aftermarket.

What you have is no longer an SKX though...

There is no "must have" watch, in my opinion. No collection "needs" any specific watch to be "complete." Your collection should contain whatever tickles your fancy. I personally think SKXs are awesome, but overrated and not great value at the prices you find them for these days, so not worth it for me.

Hence the "s I used 😊 Sure taste and therefore any collection is personal, but the SKX was pretty iconic back in the day. Yes it is outdated, but it still has a huge fanbase...I think that means something.

Then again, I completely agree that it's definitely not worth some of the current prices people are asking for it. I'm so glad I got mine when I did...

I think when Seiko started hitting 400 to $1,000 I started looking at brands like Squale and Microbrands like Nodus, Baltic and Christopher Ward more. Now I feel I've just jumped over Seiko entirely, though the new SSK023 & 25 range has me intrigued.

Yeah, the SKX is not the only Seiko that went up in price 🙄 Some say Orient is the new Seiko and to some extent that seems to be the case...

Fair enough, I guess you bought them for a different reason, and/or with different expectations...

Sorry, didn't mean to come across as snarky. Glad you're enjoying your SKX 😎

You didn't 😃 and I didn't want to come across as insulted. That's the one flaw of this thing, we don't get intonation and so we don't know how it was meant 🙄

FYI,deep blue makes a few model that look like SKX.different sizes and color.Bought one before Christmas.I really like it
