Origin of the JLC Reverso

I finally bought one of my dream watches recently - the Reverso.

I have always been fascinated by the origin story of this spectacular watch. It is said that the original steel back was to protect the glass of the watch for polo players. But what puzzles me is that even if a steel back can ensure that no glass would be damaged, wouldn't the shock from the impact of a polo ball still damage the movement inside? Whether this origin story is true is not that important, but I am just curious and wonder if all the origin story was more a marketing gimmick.

I’ve often had the same thought: being whacked by a mallet or a ball would terminally bash any watch, particularly of that period, back-to-front or not!

😂

You’ve got yourself a beauty!

I was wondering the same. Maybe true it was designed for polo players but I wonder how many of them actually wore one while playing polo.

Either way, it is a beautiful watch. Congratulations!

Congrats! Enjoy your Tribute! I've really enjoyed my Duoface and have found it to be extremely versatile on straps.

Congrats,beautiful watch

British Polo players in India before WW2.

No one knows if the tech works. It just makes for great storytelling

I'm also unsure exactly why one would need to be wearing a watch during a match. Yes, a chukka is seven minutes, but is a player on horseback really going to be checking their dinky wristwatch during game play, and how does that work if it is flipped over anyway?

Congratulations, I luv my reverso

Congratulations!

Congratulations. This is one of my all time favorite watches. Sadly, unless I find a used one at a very good (unrealistic) price, I don't think I will ever be able to buy one. Therefore, I will enjoy it vicariously through your acquisition! Enjoy.

If it was just regular glass, it would have been much weaker than today crytals

Beautiful Reverso!

While it could be a marketing gimmick, but for me there are many more gimmicky watches out there.
