I bought these two Cartier Tank watches 2 years ago for my wife and myself to celebrate our 25th anniversary. I noted that the Tank was originally designed as a small watch, and that is one of the reasons it is so elegant as a dress watch. On the other hand, I also noted at the time that Cartier had also introduced a larger version (XL). According to Cartier's official promotional pictures, the XL is intended to be a large watch and designed to have a sizeable presence on the wrist. Cartier's designers seem to make the Tank evolve with the time.
When I tried the Large on my wrist, despite that I already knew the Tank is intended to wear small on the wrist, I still found it too small to my taste. My wife also found the same with the Small. She then tried the Large and decided to take the Large without a second thought. My decision was more challenging, as while I found the Large too small, I also found the Extra Large a bit too large. But I ended up picking the Extra Large.
I have not regretted this decision, and my wife and I have been extremely happy with our choices. The XL is slightly larger than what I would have preferred, but I love its more elaborated dial finishes and the automatic movement inside. Given the brand and its automatic caliber, I think the XL is a bargain for the price.
