Papa's old watch

I have vivid memories of my dad wearing watches when I was a kid. I remember how they look and I remember him dressing up for work because he wore a suit everyday. I call my dad "papa" which is just dad in Spanish.

All things said my dad and I are very different people, but similar in our values. We're both experts at worrying and planning (good and bad), but when it comes to collecting things and obsessing about them I have papa beat hands down. For this reason my dad was never really that attached to his watches. He really just went with the flow and kept up with technology as it evolved. So like many others, when smart phones came out my dad stopped wearing wrist watches.

Now my mom on the other hand was always attached to her things. She still wears an automatic Citizen watch that my gradma wore at one point (my mom gave it to her then took it back when she passed). Thankfully she got my dad to buy some semi decent watches when they went to Switzerland. One of these was the quartz Tissot Seastar which is pictured here. Two tone square dial magic, popular at the time obviously.

I only got back into watches as an adult, so naturally I started asking my dad about his old ones eventually. Lucky for me he literally gave me his whole lot! I fixed some, gave up on others. But this Tissot really spoke to me. I asked him if I could keep it and he said "I thought you were keeping them all" haha.

My dad is not a watch guy obviously, but now I am. Thanks to my mom he has something to hand down even if he hadnt planned to. So now my son can also reap those stories and benefits. Ill have some nice pieces for him eventually, but Im sure for him, like me, nothing will ever beat papa's / abuelo's watch.

That's a beautiful watch with a great story! Good thing your mother taught your father a thing or two about wearing watches. It still looks very wearable as a dress watch and the dial looks to be in excellent condition too. I hope your son will take great care of it too when his turn comes.

Would you consider getting a modern Tissot Seastar and continuing your father's heritage?

I do own an automatic Tissot PRX actually, so that will hopefully make it to my son one day.

I like the the Seastar 2000 but it is waaaay to big. If they ever make a 42mm or smaller I would consider that. The 36mm Seastar on the other hand are too small for my taste.

It's a great piece. You can wear itnand think of time together with your Papa. Cool he can let you wear it now so you can share the happiness
