What’s considered as ‘tank’ style?

I’ve been trying to add a tank styled watch to my collection. My main attraction is the original Cartier tank.

However, I’m not ready yet to spend the price for it.

I’ve been looking at the less expensive side.

I have had one from the Indian brand called HMT in the past.

Because of these two, I have some how come to believe that only if the watch has straight lugs extending through the case, the style is true to ‘tank’.

However I see other rectangular and polygon shaped watches that are sold as tanks.

Some from Seiko that have offset or tapered or hidden or no lugs:

Some from Casio:

Now, I’m confused what exactly constitutes a ‘tank’ style. Is there a singular definition to it? I want to add one such watch to my collection, so please help with the right information.

Thank you.

The name comes from the treaded military armed vehicle.

Here;s a French WWI tank

So I'd say that the completely straight edges down to the lug are essential. Anything else is a stretch. People don't know how to say rectangular.

I would save my money instead of spending it on crap that you think may satisfy your itch. A real tank from Cartier is an achievable grail (especially in quartz and pre owned)

I’m not aware of an actual definition, but since the category is named after a specific watch I would think it needs to look like that watch. I would say most of what you posted are “rectangular” watches, but again I don’t know if there’s a right answer here.

For your purposes, if any of these or other similar watches look good to you, give them a try.

I personally like Seiko SWR049

I thought about it the same way. However, the other options are a fraction of the cost of the OG tank. So why not both.

I like it because it resembles the OG tank the most. I don't know why Seiko did it but it's ok.

Update : I have stopped looking for Tank styled watches. I ll perhaps invest in a Cartier Tank for the long term.
