The first watch I bought was in 1971. It was an Omega Chronostop. it cost me about a month's wages. The watch fell into the Bay of Naples about ten years later. This picture is of it's replacement...

Quality is the relationship between subject and object. In a middle class setting with shelter, food and drink provided, a finely cut diamond is worth more than a bottle of water. In a desert, on one's own with rescue days away, the bottle of water is worth far more than the said diamond.
Your mum's taste in watches has improved, in as much as the watches she is interested in add some value to her. "Chapeau" to your mum.

First watch was an Omega Chronostop cal 920 in 1971. I was not quite eighteen. I had the watch for just over a decade, before it fell into the sea when on holiday. I have spent many years exploring replacements, including a second Chronostop in 2018.
