Remember the time…

…all the YouTubers breathlessly exclaimed the used Rolex market had crashed? While prices have dipped a little, I’ve been waiting for the true market adjustment.

Actually I haven’t, because I was pretty sure this was all nonsense. Look, we all hate that luxury brands don’t care about enthusiasts anymore. And that’s exactly the point. They don’t notice us because there are 7 guys buying 97 watches a month. That’s who they care about. And guess what? That terrible economy you’re worried about? Those guys are getting even richer during it.

Which brings me to the article. In a nutshell, after a slight dip, Swiss watch exports have made back their losses and then some. So those 7 guys are doing just fine and will continue to keep prices high. If you wanted to buy a Rolex or Patek, you’re just as f**KES as you were a few months ago. Cheers.

Pretty reassuring that Rolexes will always be out of reach for me

I'd really love to have an Explorer. I'd love even more to have Gal Gadot as my life partner. Neither grail desire is very likely to be attained in the foreseeable future. Life goes on. The only place these self-declared defeciences in my world are any sort of problem is in my head. I can lament the unfairness of this situation with semi misty eyes over my morning coffee or make the choice to feel grateful for the wonderful watches I do have and get on with my day. Rolex is a great brand producing great watches, but neither an Exporer on my wrist nor Gal Gadot on my arm are in the cards. I can accept both realities without much thought to any sort of perceived inability to enjoy life without them. However, I do sometimes feel a little sad about Gal's loss for a "fabulous" life.

That’s a very healthy outlook.

Maybe I’m reading this wrong, but I have to think increased or steady new watch sales plus increased new watch prices are going to push used prices back up. I guess it also depends on what happens with companies that allegedly bought a ton of watches during COVID and have been hanging on to them. If that really happened and those companies need cash, I suppose they’ll be dumping stock. The other thing I’ll mention is that these price drops are still pretty small compared to the increases we saw during COVID. Used prices are still very high compared to past years.

You, sir, are obviously a man of taste. Were we talking about watches?
